Full Job Description

Applications are invited for 4 Teaching Fellow vacancies with responsibility for teaching:
+ Undergraduate medical students in line with the universities' and RCOphth ophthalmology curricula.
+ Postgraduate learners (Foundation Doctors, GPs and MSc students)
+ Undergraduate & Postgraduate Physicians Associates
Candidates may request that the clinical duties of this post be attached to any sub-specialty Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital (with clinical work at any of the hospitals clinical sites)., Clinical Duties:
1. Full management of patients attending hospital clinics / casualty departments as required.
2. The post holder will be required to attend specified clinics as established by Service / Training Director of their chosen service(s).
3. Supervision of junior medical staff in the Service and participation in informal and formal clinical teaching.
4. There will be opportunities for undertaking clinical research, audit and quality improvement projects.
5. There are no surgical lists attached to this post but this is at the discretion of the Service Director of the chosen Service (but any surgical experience would not occur on surgical lists used for training of Specialist Ophthalmology trainees).
The clinical duties of this post are to be undertaken in a manner satisfactory to the Service Director.
Teaching Duties
1. Preparation, development and upkeep of teaching material (including websites), and equipment
2. Student projects, supervision and feedback,
3. Assessment of coursework and dissertations
4. Mentoring of medicals students in preparing course work, abstracts posters, publications as required
5. Identifying underperforming learners, and offering additional teaching
6. Audit / Research / Quality Improvement Projects into Education / Training methods
7. Mandatory attendance at and highly active contributory role in the running of the Moorfields Academy.
8. Writing exam questions, Case based PBL
9. Marking and assessments (oral and written)

Working for our organisation
The Undergraduate Education team is a diverse and close knit team who provide teaching for over 1000 students. The cohesion of the team enables us to seamlessly provide teaching for our students and be creative and innovative in the way we teach.
During the teaching fellowship you will be able to develop a comprehensive teaching portfolio. You will gain experience of small and large group teaching in both virtual and face-to-face settings. You will have the opportunity to develop teaching material, design assessments, take part in interviews for medical school, deliver courses and incorporate technology into your teaching. You will also be expected to undertake an education related project, with a view to publication.
We will part-fund a PGCert level higher degree in medical education and time for fulfilling course-work assignments can be organised. If all 4 teaching fellows are keen to undertake higher degrees this may require all 4 to opt for online learning courses or blended learning (not courses requiring predominantly face-to- face tuition)., This is a post within Moorfields Eye Hospital and can be associated with a subspecialty department of the candidate's choice within the Hospital. It will mainly involve sessions at City Road and St George's, but can include sessions at any of the Moorfields satellite units.

There are no on-call or regular surgical sessions associated with this post. The post is not recognised towards completion of continuum of training (CCT).
This is a fulltime post. Part-time working may be arranged.
The teaching timetable is known in advance, but will change from week to week. The post holder will have a timetable with 8 PA and 2 SPA/ RSTA sessions a week. Over the period of the year, 50-60% of the post holders' weekly time is spent on teaching duties with 40-50% on clinical work and associated duties.
Training, Quality Improvement and Research (into Educational Methods and Clinical Ophthalmology) is very much encouraged and there may be an opportunity to undertake a distance learning degree in Medical Education for all those interested who stay in post for 1 year or more.
Teaching fellows undertaking / holding higher degrees in medical education are particularly welcome. Every effort is made to allow sufficient time for medical education study and research in order to ensure completion of higher degrees and publications in the 12 months period of the teaching fellowship.
The PGcert level higher degree in medical education is part funded by the department and time for fulfilling course assignments and CPD / journal club events can be organised.
