Full Job Description

The Communications Specialist (Corporate Engagement) will be accountable for stakeholder engagement relationships and strategies across a diverse set of issues important to the UK Civil Aviation Authority. This high-profile role will be managing the visit programme for our senior leaders, ensuring they have visibility of their forward plans and receive high-quality, timely briefings. It will also ensure that we provide regular communications to stakeholders on new emerging issues and key organisational activities and provide education and advice to our internal colleagues on significant developments in our stakeholder landscape and key engagement with stakeholders. The post holder will also engage with some political stakeholders, for example with the Transport Select Committee and Clerk.,

  • Developing, implementing and being accountable for stakeholder engagement relationships and strategies across a diverse set of issues important to the UK Civil Aviation Authority so that we can promote and protect the organisation with key stakeholder groups. This will include a robust forward plan of engagement with key stakeholder groups.
  • Providing regular communications to stakeholders on new emerging issues and key organisational activities, for example through a regular newsletter for stakeholders.
  • Educating and informing colleagues across the business on our stakeholder engagement and external relations and providing updates on significant developments in our stakeholder landscape.
  • Drafting briefs and speeches for senior leaders as required.
  • Supporting colleagues across the Communications & Engagement Team in handling external responses (such as parliamentary questions, Freedom of Information requests and general enquiries), developing content and communicating internally to ensure an integrated approach to corporate engagement.
  • Responsible for managing stakeholder engagement for senior leaders (e.g. visits programme) with robust forward plan and high quality, timely briefing.
  • Supporting political engagement as required, e.g. relationship with the Transport Select Committee and Clerk, and with key MPs and their staff.
  • Support the Communications Hub structure to ensure a coordinated, consistent and integrated approach to communications for the organisation's priority areas., Influence and collaboration: You'll have a wide experience engaging and securing buy-in from senior stakeholders internally and externally. It is desirable you'll be able to actively understand concerns, needs, and expectations and be able to build trust and positive relationships.
  • Crisis Management: Aviation and aerospace projects can face crises or controversies. A communications professional in this role should be adept at managing communication during emergencies, ensuring accurate information dissemination, and maintaining stakeholder confidence.
  • Adaptability: The aviation and aerospace industry is dynamic, with constant changes in regulations, safety protocols, and technology. Being adaptable allows you to respond effectively to evolving stakeholder needs and expectations.

You will be joining an exciting Communications Department which covers a broad range of internal and external communications channels with a very dynamic approach to issues management. The CAA's work is high profile and regularly attracts mainstream, national media attention. There is significant public, political and trade interest in our work. You can really add value as you will be looked upon for advice by the Communications Director and the wider team to ensure that there is a coordinated and coherent approach to stakeholder engagement and the management of interactions with the CAA's most senior and influential stakeholders. As a corporate affiliate member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, we will look to support your development and provide membership to CIPR. As part of your development, we offer multiple internal courses and would also support your development through funding of external specialist courses. This role is pivotal in making sure the Communications Department's work is integrated across the different functions to prevent silo working. So work is strategic and focused on an organisational priority, rather than a specific channel.

  • Experience: We are keen to hear from individuals who have at least two years' experience working in stakeholder management or stakeholder-facing roles at a senior level within large public or private sector organisations with multi-faceted stakeholder relationships.
  • Understand Stakeholder Dynamics: You will have a deep understanding of the diverse stakeholders involved in the aviation and aerospace sector. These may include government bodies, local communities, airlines, investors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Effective Communication Skills: Clear, concise, and persuasive communication is essential, including strong writing skills and have the ability to stick to deadlines. You'll interact with various stakeholders, so you'll need to know how to tailor your messages appropriately for each audience.
