Computer Science Teacher

Computer Science is a very popular subject at Rutlish School, making the department central to the life of the school. The teaching staff are specialist Computer Science teachers who work hard to improve standards and deliver an interesting and stimulating curriculum.

The school's use of technology promotes a curriculum that is ambitious for all students, inspired by creative, interactive and high-quality teaching. Our aim is for the Digital Learning Coordinator to provide relevant and current training that will enhance teaching and learning for all of our students. We aim to firmly embed the teaching and learning opportunities that the learning platforms provide in every department and provide teaching staff with the relevant training to use the technology available to them, in the most effective way possible. The overall objective is to equip staff with the skills to become autonomous with their use of technology, use technology to reduce workload and apply their skills to address their curriculum needs.

STAFF AND FACILITIES:

The department is located in the heart of the school site and occupies a range of five spacious and very well equipped, air-conditioned rooms. The facilities are excellent and the environment exudes a very professional feel. The department is supported by a network manager and a team of experienced technicians.

In Year 7 students learn and apply the skills and capabilities as outlined in the National Curriculum for Computer Science. In the Autumn Term students are introduced to the school's network and Virtual Learning Environment. Students learn about E safety - how to stay safe when using the Internet. Students continue to build their Computer Science skills throughout the year, by working on various projects that includes; programming using Python, introduction to computer hardware and software, data representation and web design.

In Year 8 students continue to build on the skills and knowledge they have acquired in Year 7. In the Autumn Term students use Photoshop to manipulate images, using a variety of design tools. Students continue to build their Computer Science skills throughout the year, by working on various projects that includes; web design using HTML coding in Notepad and Python programming. Students learn about networks and continue to build their knowledge and understanding of binary.

In Year 9 students continue to build on the skills and knowledge they have acquired in Year 8. Students prepare for GCSE Computer Science by working on two programming units with a focus on the Python programming language. For the remainder of the year, students focus on learning topics such as Web design, sorting and searching algorithms, animation and they complete the GCSE topic binary representation.

KS4:

GCSE COMPUTER SCIENCE

Students study the OCR GCSE Computer Science syllabus. The course consists of two theory papers. Students build on their theory knowledge of hardware, software, networks, data representation and Python programming. Students who gain a grade 4 minus at the end of Year 9 can opt for Computer Science at GCSE.

OCR National iMedia - equivalent to 1 GCSE

Students study the OCR Creative Interactive iMedia course. This course enables students to plan and create a variety of interactive products such as websites, animations and digital graphics.

KS5

GCE Computer Science

Students study the OCR Computer Science syllabus. The course consists of a Non-Examined Assessment (20%) and two theory papers (40%) each. Students use Pycharm to program a computer game. Students continue to build on their theory knowledge of Computer Science by studying topics such as Networks, Data Types, System Software and Development and Data Structures to mention a few.

The overriding objective of the department is that teachers want to use their expertise and experience to deliver high quality, motivating lessons to bring this vibrant subject alive, making teaching and learning Computer Science both exciting and rewarding for all.

The successful candidate will be invested in developing and contributing to innovative schemes of work that will deliver a curriculum offer that equips students for the future. A drive for innovation and a desire to further enhance this outstanding department is of utmost importance. They will also develop and contribute to the innovative use of digital learning and technology across the curriculum that will equip teaching staff to improve their practice.
