Full Job Description

This is a fantastic opportunity to join the conservation team on the programme. The Gulf History and Arabic Science Project Conservator is responsible for undertaking the assessment, preparation, and practical conservation of items from the Library's collections selected for digitisation as part of the project, providing training in handling and general use and care of the collections, and liaising with colleagues and other conservation professionals on proposed conservation treatments. You will work in a team of three conservators and be co-located with the wider project team.

You will have recent practical hands-on experience in the conservation of books and/or paper-based items, along with an understanding of digitisation methods and workflow. You will have experience working with historic collections, excellent communication, organisational, and planning skills, and the ability to work well under pressure and prioritise your workload to meet deadlines. A strong commitment to developing your understanding of our archives relating to the Gulf and Arabic Science and expanding your knowledge of the conservation of this material is also essential.

In return, we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits. Our pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our staff can become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library contributes a minimum of 28.97% (this may be higher dependant on grade. Another significant benefit the Library provides is the provision of a flexible working hours scheme which could allow you to work your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a 3 month period.
