Full Job Description

The post-holder will work into Grampian (National Deaf Service) and the Mental Health service. The caseload will be up to 10 patients on Grampian ward and 10 within the Mental Health Service. The post-holder will travel to assess referrals to their ward. The post-holder will have caseloads within the national prison estates as part of the Deaf In-Reach service. Depending on the balance of referrals, this may also include assessment of referrals to the wider women's service. In the Mental Health Service the post-holder will work within an MDT and along side another consultant psychiatrist who will also have a caseload within the ward. To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Trust's personnel policies and procedures. This may include assessing competences under the Modernising Medical Careers framework. To ensure that junior medical staff working with the postholder operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant. To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients. To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively, and submit this promptly to the Information Department. To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and service. To attend and participate in the academic programme, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme., The post-holder will be involved as a member of the multi-disciplinary team in the assessment and treatment of mentally disordered offenders. The post has responsibility for a caseload of 20 patients plus Deaf In-Reach cases from National Prison Estates. For suitably experienced candidates it may be possible to negotiate an academic/research session. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the training of medical students, resident doctors and other disciplines. The duties of the post are subject to change from time to time in the light of changing requirements of the service, in consultation with the post-holder. Clinical duties of the post-holder at Rampton Hospital will include:

  • Assessment of individuals referred for admission to Rampton Hospital or for an opinion from the service. This will require travelling to medium secure units, and prisons within the United Kingdom.
  • Acting as Care Programme Approach Co-ordinator and overseeing the treatment of patients in their care.
  • Chairing clinical team meetings, convening and chairing CPA meetings and leadership of the MDT.
  • Providing timely reports to Tribunals, Hospital Managers, Ministry of Justice, Courts etc.
  • Liaison with medium secure and other units, prisons, Commissioners and Ministry of Justice in relation to the care pathway of patients under their care.
  • Convening and chairing Section 117 meetings.
  • The post-holder will provide Deaf In-reach services as part of a multidisciplinary team. This will provide support, monitoring and advice to patients.
  • The post-holder will be supported in maintaining his or her CPD status in line with Royal College, GMC and appraisal expectations. Peer Groups are available to join both within the hospital and the wider Trust. The post-holder will be expected to join a Peer Group, as per the Royal College of Psychiatrists requirements. There is an active Postgraduate Programme including Case Conferences, Journal Clubs and visiting lecturers at Rampton Hospital. The post-holder will be expected to actively participate in the Postgraduate Programme. Appropriate funding and time will be made available to the appointee for the study leave required to maintain continuing professional development, including the development of any special interests which the post-holder may have. Participate in and contribute to the development of clinical governance, quality assurance and audit, with support from the Audit Department where appropriate. Contribute to plans for ongoing service development and lead service development for the National Deaf Service under the Clinical Director. Share administrative duties including provision of information, data and reports required for management of services. Be an active member of medical staffing structures. For the National Deaf Service there will be an expectation that the post-holder will provide guidance and support to the Clinical Director on matters relating to the National Deaf Service. The post holder is expected to provide leadership for all aspects of the National Deaf Service and have an outward facing management and leadership role regarding the National Deaf Service with the support of the Clinical Director for the Mental Health and Deaf Service. Provide clinical and managerial supervision to non-consultant career grade doctors on the team (these doctors are line managed by the Associate Medical Director).     Applicants must be eligible for registration on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register, have Approved Clinician status and be approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act. Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists is preferred, but equivalent qualifications and experience would be considered.
