Full Job Description

We have a vacancy for a dynamic and visionary Consultant Genetic Counsellor to join our GC management team as Joint Team Leader for the Cancer Team. Working alongside the Lead Genetic Counsellor, two other Consultant Genetic Counsellors and an established team of Principal GCs the successful applicant will have responsibility for the leadership and development of a sub-team of genetic counsellors. As an integral member of the GC management team, this individual will also have a significant input into the strategic development and leadership of the Cancer Genetic Counselling service within the West Midlands Regional Genetic Centre. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic Genetic Counsellor, with a particular interest in Cancer Genetics to influence the direction of Genetic Counselling in the West Midlands, combining a clinical and leadership role. The post holder also forms part of the Clinical Genetics leadership team and will work alongside our medical and
managerial colleagues to shape genomic services in the region. The role will include a significant clinical component with high levels of autonomy, providing expert genetic counselling, predominantly within cancer genetics., The clinical department work in close collaboration with the Central and South Genomic Laboratory Hub as part of the Wessex, Oxford and West Midlands Genomics Consortium. The consortium aims to deliver comprehensive genetic testing to 11 million people across the region, almost one fifth of the UK population. There are also strong links with Regional hospitals through the West Midlands GMSA. We collaborate closely with universities and specialist hospitals throughout the region as well as with the BSGM, AGNC and GCRAB.

The successful candidate will be an AHCS or HCPC Registered Genetic Counsellor or hold equivalent overseas registration and be eligible for GCRAB registration through reciprocity. Significant clinical cancer experience is essential as is a proven record in implementing improvements to genetics services. Excellent leadership skills are important for this role and previous experience of leading or mentoring individuals or teams would be an advantage. Learning from leadership training or qualifications is also desirable.
