Full Job Description

The service supports three Consultant-led outpatient clinics each week: a Fracture Liaison Service, the Cardiff Bone Densitometry service, an outpatient 'Bone Treatment' service and a nurse led Self-Injection Program.

The service offers outpatient training to post-graduate trainees in general medicine, geriatric medicine and clinical biochemistry. The service is active in research, current studies are investigating the management of osteogenesis imperfecta, the genetics of Paget's disease, the use of probiotics in Paget's disease, the mechanisms of pain in Paget's disease and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the identification of vertebral fracture. Within the metabolic bone disease unit, we are keen to support the drive within geriatric medicine to increase the opportunities for high quality clinical research, which in the longer term will benefit our patients.

The successful candidate will lead the metabolic bone disease team continuing and developing clinical, educational and research-based activities.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Metabolic Bone Disease team within the Geriatrics Department at Cardiff and Vale UHB.

The Metabolic Bone Disease Service within Cardiff and Vale UHB was established in 1992. It serves a local population of 445,000 people. In 2017, the service became Wales' only Paget`s Association Centre of Excellence, and in 2023 was named as the only specialist centre for Rare Bone Disease in Wales.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £100,000 per annum to £146,000 per annum.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full.
