Full Job Description

We are seeking a Consultant Haematologist with a focus on the non-malignancy area of thrombosis and hospital transfusion medicine to work within the department who would be dedicated and passionate in helping us to provide outstanding and exemplary care for patients with blood disorders in the South West.

We run a dynamic service, with opportunity for you to develop your interests in areas such as lymphoma, maternal medicine and laboratory work. We also fully support the development of skills in education, management and leadership.

The post-holder will work with seven other Consultant Haematologists and two Specialty Doctors, plus junior and nursing team to provide a range of services for patients with complex medical needs, and so you will have a supportive and friendly team around you, providing plenty of scope for you to showcase your skills and to learn more.

Main duties of the job

The post does not require on call or participation on the routine CoTW ward attending rota.It is expected that the post holder will contribute the GP advice and guidance service.

There is a commitment to monthly meeting with a representative of the team from GP Care to support community management of VTE and the post holder will contribute clinical advice to this service. The Trust has a regional vascular surgery and large obstetric service which, although not specifically linked to this job plan, could provide opportunities for clinical interactions.

The hospital has a large range of surgical service and is a major trauma centre for which clinical support for transfusion medicine and governance are important to maintain clinical standards of care and regulatory standards. The Trust is a pathology hub with several co-located regional diagnostic services, including those for Haematopathology and Genetics.

The Department of Haematology is based at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust, in the Pathology Sciences and Brunel Buildings. The Department provides services for the local population of 500,000 and supports region or supraregional services for some subspecialties in NBT, including diagnostic services in the Bristol Haemato-Oncology Diagnostic Service SIHMDS.

There is a Chemotherapy Suite, adjacent to Medical Day Care in the Brunel Building. This provides systemic anti-cancer therapy and blood product support during the standard working week. Other supporting services include an acute oncology team, a PICC line insertion service, palliative care services and the NGS-Macmillan support centre located adjacent to the Brunel Building.
