This post is for 12 months as a Locum on Trust terms and conditions and has the potential to be made permanent.
The main priority for this post will be to deliver the highest clinical standards in the practice of orthopaedic hand conditions. The post holder will contribute to the hand trauma rota and develop high quality research in trauma & elective orthopaedic hand surgery. The post holder will be provided with a mentor for a period of 1 - 2 years.
The successful candidate will be joining the hand unit in a busy Major Trauma Centre. The hand unit at The James Cook University Hospital is staffed by orthopaedic and plastics hand surgeons. We run an integrated hand trauma on call rota on a 1 in 6 week on call basis. There is no orthopaedic general trauma commitment. The hand trauma clinics are split into virtual and face to face clinics and these feed into regular hand trauma lists. It would be expected that the new consultant would be involved in cross site working between James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, The Friarage Hospital in Northallerton and Redcar Primary Care Hospital.
A new surgical hub is currently being constructed at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton and is planned to open in April 2025. This will provide an environment for high volume low complexity work of which hand surgery will be a part., Clinical / On Call responsibilities
· Undertake any responsibility which relates to the agreed special interests ie special interest
· Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences
· Provide professional supervision and management of junior medical staff
· Be actively involved in the management of the department including attendance at the fortnightly Consultant/Directorate meetings and regular consultant away days.
· Take part in annual appraisals (mandatory for all Consultants). Appropriate time and assistance will be provided for preparation.
· Active involvement in audit
· Involvement in research - Joint research projects are undertaken with both the University of Teesside and York University and involvement in the further development of research links. The department is actively involved in multi-centre trials in hand surgery.
· Continuing professional development.
· Any other duties which may be required.

Working for our organisation
The Orthopaedic Department has a long tradition of delivering excellent clinical outcomes. The unit is committed to training and offers supervised teaching and personal career development for those trainees who wish to develop a career in orthopaedics. In addition the department has strong links to Teesside University through which it delivers a postgraduate orthopaedic MCh Course including modules in clinical research.
The orthopaedic department has an active academic team lead by Prof Amar Rangan and Prof Paul Baker. The team includes two senior lecturers, research nurses and an orthopaedic research scientist. The team including the hand team have co-ordinated a number of national and international multicentre clinical trials. Members of the team are also grant holders for a range of NIHR portfolio adopted trails.
The hand service at the James Cook Hospital is delivered by Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgeons on a combined Orthoplastic rota. Hand on-call is delivered on a 1 in 6 weekly basis by 3 Orthopaedic and 3 Plastic surgeons. Outside the on call weeks surgeons deliver a comprehensive sub-specialty / tertiary hand service., It is now the policy of South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who are new to the Trust who require DBS clearance for the post they have been offered, are required to pay the cost of their DBS. The method of payment for this is via salary deduction from your first month's pay.
