Full Job Description

With a proven track record of improving the service, notable achievements in the last couple of years include:
+ Molecular automated PCR for theranostic work (e.g Idylla® BRAF) and tumour expression analysis (e.g ALK in lung carcinoma)
+ Provision of a EUS and EBUS rapid onsite evaluation service for pancreatic, lung, adrenal & head/neck
+ Pathology support for Bowel Cancer Screening programme including age expansion and Bowel Scope Screening
+ Collaborative working with neighbouring hospitals as part of the South 1 NHSI Pathology Network. This includes the procurement of an end to end digital Histopathology solution which will connect all 5 Trusts within the region, facilitating the sharing of cases, MDT discussion & expert 2^nd opinion. We will be looking to install & implement digital Histopathology in 2024.
The department is actively involved in the delivery of the education programme of the University of Exeter and this post will be part of this provision. For new consultants the job plan for this post will include 2.5 SPAs for the first year.
Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleague, The Trust employs 5,000+ staff, has a budget of £380 million and 750 beds. We work with health and social care organisations -including NHS Kernow and NHS England- to ensure local healthcare needs are met. We provide acute medical, surgical and specialist services to around 570,000 - which can increase significantly during busy holiday periods.

The Department of Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology currently has 1 full time 10 PA vacancy for a Consultant Histopathologist with the opportunity to take on further clinical sessions once appointed.
Our laboratory is a designated centre for many Cancer sites and has full UKAS Accreditation. The laboratory received over 35,000 Histology, approximately 1,600 Diagnostic Cytology and 900 autopsy requests in 2023. The department performs a wide range of molecular techniques. The department has recently moved to a subspecialty reporting system. Applicants from both specialised and more generalised backgrounds will be considered, but an interest in GI &/or dermatopathology would be preferable.

Applicants are required to hold Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
Applicants that are UK trained, must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
