Full Job Description

The appointee will cover anaesthetic lists at Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford and Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup.
The candidate will be expected to participate in an on call out-of-hours consultant rota covering the acute anaesthetic services at Darent Valley hospital. This includes managing sick laparotomies, obstetric services and stabilising critically ill children prior to transfer to a tertiary centre via STRS. At present the frequency is 1:17 but this can change depending on the number of consultants available to participate in this rota. The appointee will have the option of moving a theatre session (or the whole day) post on call to another day in the immediate week to facilitate adequate rest. Rest facilities for overnight nap are available in the anaesthetic office if required., Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust (DGT) is a dynamic and transforming Trust, committed to delivering the highest quality service to the communities it serves. There is an excellent Postgraduate Centre at Darent Valley Hospital. This provides lecture and tutorial rooms and a dining room. Numerous meetings for Hospital Doctors and General Practitioners are held at the centre. There are regular educational sessions and meetings covering Case Presentation, Journal club, Histopathology joint meetings, General, Urological and Vascular X-ray meetings and Mammography Meetings.

The Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the department. He / she may be asked to cover lists in Sidcup as a part of the job plan.
+ He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and the running of his/her clinical department.
+ For purposes of management and use of resources he/she will be accountable to the Clinical Director of the Critical Care Directorate working closely with the General Manager and he/she will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.
+ Participate actively and at times take a lead in research and clinical audit projects, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties.
+ The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision, management of junior staff and participate in their appointment with other Consultants.
+ The appointee will be expected to participate in postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.
