Full Job Description
Applications are invited for two full time (10 PA) Consultants in Anaesthetics at Bedford Hospital, which is part of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.These are substantive posts & appointments will be made in accordance with the Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (2003).
The successful candidates will join a friendly, inclusive, forward thinking & enthusiastic Anaesthetic Department of 24 consultants.
The Anaesthetic Department provides comprehensive services normally expected of a district hospital. These include colorectal, urology, general surgery, breast surgery, trauma & orthopaedics, obstetrics & gynaecology, ENT, oro-maxillofacial surgery, ophthalmology and plastic surgery. The current Vascular surgical unit (regional Centre for Luton, Bedford and Milton Keynes) will be relocated to the Luton site in 2025.
The department is supported by a 10 bedded Critical Care unit, the capacity of which is determined by the staffing numbers. The Trust now has dedicated robotic (Da Vinci) lists for Colorectal, Urology & Gynaecological surgery.
Additional special interest skills that will complement the current roles already provided in the department will be advantageous. Subspecialty interests for theatre sessions may be accommodated in various specialties.
The posts will involve supervision of trainees. The 2023 GMC survey shows good overall satisfaction by trainees placed at Bedford Hospital.
Main duties of the job
The key duties for the Consultant role include but are not limited to:
To work constructively with colleagues in the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine to provide the best care for patients
To provide pre-operative assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up for patients undergoing elective and emergency surgery.
To develop existing relationships between anaesthesia and Clinical Service/Support Units within the Trust.
To provide out of hours on call cover for theatres and obstetrics
Teaching and training of intermediate grade and trainee medical staff, nursing staff and medical students.
To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD).
