Full Job Description

This is a substantive full-time consultant post in the Burns and Plastic Surgery Department.
The successful applicant will join the current team of six Consultant Burns Surgeons. This post will be the sixth post, alongside four full time colleagues and two colleagues who will job share. The successful candidate will join the existing Burns team of consultants; Mr Chris Wearn (Service Lead), Mr Ian Mackie, Mr Sankhya Sen, Mr Jon Pleat, Mr Tom Cobley and Miss Catalina Estela Ferrero.

The Burns service is delivered across two sites in Bristol. The Burns Consultants work on a service week model delivering acute and elective care.

In hours, during a service week, one Consultant is based at Southmead Hospital covering the Adult Burns Unit and a second Consultant is based at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children covering the Paediatric Burns Centre. Out of hours, a single consultant provides emergency cover for both sites. These weeks form part of a six-week rolling cycle.

The Burns MDTs run on Mondays across both sites. Further information on the rota and working schedule is available on request.

The Burns and Plastics Surgery department at Southmead has one dedicated ward (Gate 33A). The Adult Burns Unit is based on the ward and consists of seven cubicle side rooms and associated facilities including occupational therapy/physiotherapy space. There are a further 2 rooms dedicated to the delivery of a daily acute burns clinic where new and follow up patients will be reviewed. There are designated and dedicated thermoregulated ICU cubicles for more critically ill patients.

The four bedded (side-rooms) Paediatric Burns ward is co-located with the High Dependency Unit at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. There are dedicated thermoregulated ICU cubicles for more critically ill patients. A daily acute burns and follow up clinic is delivered adjacent to the burns ward in the Rainforest Outpatients area.

At Southmead Hospital (the Adult Service), a protected Burns theatre runs three times per week. However, access to theatre is available 24/7 for burns emergency cases. At Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, there is 24-hour, year-round access to a designated Burns Theatre.

The successful candidate will participate in a 1:6 out of hours on-call rota with junior support in each hospital available 24/7.
