Full Job Description

The South West Cleft Service is recruiting a permanent, full-time (10 PA) Cleft Consultant. The postholder will join a full compliment of MDT members, including two incumbent Cleft Consultants, to provide specialist care for patients across the South West region.

All Cleft surgery is undertaken at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston, and other aspects of Cleft care are delivered through a hub and spoke model, with multi-disciplinary clinics running in Gloucester, Exeter, Plymouth, and Truro, as well as Bristol.

The new post will deliver 10 PAs primarily in the South West Cleft Service, but opportunities to negotiate time in parent specialty will be discussed after appointment according to the successful candidate's interests. We may also be able to accommodate up to 2 PA of time in research (subject to discussion at interview).

Out of hours commitments - on-call for night following operating lists and by arrangement with the candidate's home specialty depending on operational needs., The clinical duties will include the diagnosis, management, and continuing care of patients of all ages with cleft lip and/or palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction, in liaison with team colleagues.

The surgical workload will include a share of the primary surgical work dependent on spoke units covered and division of local children born. Secondary speech surgery and adult revisional surgery (more than 40 procedures a year) will also be planned. For a successful candidate starting their first consultant post, a one-year mentored period will be observed of appropriate case mix.

The successful candidate will be expected to comply with all relevant Trust policies relating to administration of patient care. This includes:

Regular clinical validation of all admitted and non-admitted patients.

Working to set timescales for the triage of referrals.

Timely completion of discharge summaries.

Completion of all paperwork deemed necessary to support the management of their patients.

This postholder will take a team approach and work closely with the Cleft MDT and Clinical Director to support the delivery of performance targets, including referral to treatment time targets, cleft targets as specified in our national service specification, and reduction in non-admitted backlogs.

The postholder will also contribute to the strategic development of the MDT team, and clinical audit., welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
