Full Job Description

Applications are invited for a new, substantive Consultant in Feto-Maternal medicine to increase expertise in Fetal Medicine, high risk obstetrics & intrapartum management within the Trust and to provide leadership and innovation within the Directorate of Maternity & Perinatal Medicine.

All maternity services are provided at City Hospital, delivering approximately 5000 women per year, where there is a large level 2+ NNU and full capability to provide HDU and ITU care to our mothers. There is a nationally recognized co-located midwifery-led birthing unit.

The Fetal Medicine Unit was newly developed and equipped in 2010 and provides a full range of FM diagnostic and screening services. The service is a designated Level 2 FM Unit within the West Midlands and receives referrals from local units within Black Country & West Birmingham LMNS. The unit has well established links to allied regional services including the WM tertiary referral FMU, Regional Clinical Genetics and Fetal/Paediatric cardiology services and Birmingham Children's hospital. Antenatal care is based on a specialist multidisciplinary clinic model with clinics being staffed by dual consultants. Consultants also work with specialist midwives and community midwifery leads in teams where this promotes better access to and contact with hard-to-reach groups to ensure equal access to high quality obstetric care, The job description details the expected working arrangements which includes clinical commitments, 1.5SPA's in support of the consultant position and a further 1.0 PA which can be developed by agreement into a special interest area with clinical or managerial responsibility.

The post will provide specialist opinion and management within the areas of Fetal medicine (dedicated whole day scan list weekly) and Maternal medicine and will work in conjunction with our developed specialist service teams. There is a fortnightly FM/Perinatal MDT meeting with neonatal colleagues and a fortnightly high-risk Obstetric MDT meeting with allied medical specialties including Obstetric Anaesthesia. In addition there is the expectation to be involved in region-wide MDTs and meetings following the creation of formal Midlands-wide Fetal medicine and Maternal Medicine networks.

There is a dedicated fortnightly 12hr resident session covering Delivery suite/ Maternity unit with an allied 12hr non-resident oncall overnight. 1:8 Fri and weekends daytime resident and overnight oncall are included. There are no resident night-time sessions.

There are 7 dedicated obstetricians and 5 other consultants in Obstetrics and Gynaecology who provide obstetric emergency, in-patient and out-patient services with a full complement of junior staff.
