Full Job Description

We are looking to appoint a consultant to supporting our expanding Gastroenterology service.

The post will deliver a contribution to the endoscopy service (elective and emergency), gastroenterology outpatient services and in patient gastroenterology. In patient Gastroenterology involves managing patients on the two gastroenterology wards, respective outlier ward, seeing referrals on other wards and providing an in reach service to the Acute Medical Unit.

The post-holder will be expected to develop a sub-specialty interest in line with the needs of the department and to develop the management of this service.

The post holder will be responsible for running the GI ward on a 1 in 7 rota basis, providing daily ward rounds for 7 days. For the other 6 weeks of the cycle the post holder will deliver 5 clinical, face to face sessions (e.g 3 clinics and 2 endoscopy sessions) as well as attending MDT's and seeing referrals. Throughout the 10 week cycle the post holder will contribute to a 1: 15 on call rota for out of hours emergency endoscopy.

The appointees will join 15 consultant colleagues and will continue to develop this progressive Gastroenterology service. The current consultant body substantially contributes to national GI & bowel cancer screening policies, endoscopic accreditation and training. RWT is the West Midlands regional endoscopy training centre and was the first centre in the UK to deliver bowel cancer screening . There are active developments in liver disease, regional interventional endoscopy (EMR / HALO / EUS / ERCP, with spyglass), IBD, and clinical trials (both commercial and investigator led). The department is well resourced and supported (7 endoscopy rooms are available across 2 sites and 3 consultants are supported to enable them to have national roles in Endoscopy, Research and Training).

It is anticipated that the successful applicant will develop a sub-speciality interest in IBD. Experience in ERCP is not required.
