Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry

This post offers an exciting opportunity for an ambitious psychiatrist to support a unique NHS trust going through transition and maintaining safe and effective services during this period. Post-holders will be expected to take on an active role providing consultant leadership and oversight that could include inpatient care, recovery service, early intervention in psychosis service, crisis resolution and home treatment as well as adult (ageless) community mental health services.,

• To support and help develop the integrated care pathways.


• To provide statutory clinical reports as requested.


• To apply an evidence-based approach to clinical practice.


• To provide clinical leadership in psychiatry to the multidisciplinary team, in co-operation with the Service Manager.


• To promote multidisciplinary working.


• To support the development of a seamless service and continuity of care which are patient centred and respect social inclusion and cultural diversity.


• To provide clinical support and supervision to multidisciplinary teams, including complex risk assessments.


• To undertake Section 12 and Approved Clinician duties related to the Mental Health Act (1983), with reference to the current Code of Conduct of Practice.

Section 12 Approval Approved Clinician status MRCPsych

Relevant CCT or CESR, Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register via CCT in General Adult Psychiatry (or within 6 months at time of interview) or equivalent

Relevant Higher Degree e.g. MD, PHD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications, Demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Adult Psychiatry

Knowledge of UK Hospital Systems (or equivalent)

Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD (including being in Good standing with the College for the purposes of CPD), Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients

Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work

Ability to appraise own performance

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Evidence of participation in clinical audit relevant to specialty

Commitment to the development of a high-quality cost-effective service

Ability to deal effectively with stress

Thoroughness and attention to detail

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in difficult situations.

Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative.

Demonstrate skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients, carers and colleagues, demonstrated by:

1.Applicants have undertaken medical training in English

2.Where applicable, overseas applicants have required scores in the GMC approved English Language test. E.g., In Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) show a score of at least 7.0 in each domain (speaking, listening, reading and writing) with an overall score of at least 7.5 to be achieved in a single sitting and within 24 months of the time of application.

The transformation will happen in staggered stages; Hampshire CAMHS, part of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust joined Southern Health in February 2024, with Isle of Wight NHS Trust mental health and community services transitioning in early May 2024. The final combination of Southern Health and Solent Trusts is anticipated to occur in July 2024, when the new organisation will be formed.
