Full Job Description

Consultants will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of their departments. Consultants will undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of their clinics or department. All Consultants are expected to assume responsibility both singly and corporately for the management of the Junior Medical Staff. In particular, they are expected to be responsible for approving and monitoring junior staff rotas and junior staff locum arrangements, where appropriate. The successful applicant will be expected to participate fully in the medical audit arrangements in the District. Consultants are also expected to concern themselves with the professional development of their trainees. All Consultants have a responsibility to contribute to the teaching and assessment of undergraduates and of junior doctors.

The role will be key in the Trust transitioning from elective recovery to transformation, as we look to deliver on the exciting overarching surgical strategy for Barts Health. The post will also play a pivotal role in the delivery of the emergency General Surgery strategy across Barts Health, which will have a positive impact for emergency surgical patients across North-East London. We are therefore looking for someone with proven leadership experience and a track-record of delivering high quality care alongside organisational change,

  • The candidate should be on the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of obtaining this JAG accreditation in colonoscopy.
  • MB BS, or equivalent
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Desirable
  • Higher degree e.g. MS/MD/PhD
  • Knowledge Essential
  • Proven competency in emergency General Surgery
  • Widespread broad based knowledge of all aspects of General Surgery
  • Evidence of subspecialty knowledge of colorectal surgery
  • Desirable
  • Evidence of training in TAMIS/TEMS/TEO
  • Evidence of experience in complex benign colorectal and proctology surgery
  • Training Expected Essential
  • Higher Specialist Training in General & colorectal surgery. Evidence of sub-specialist training and competency in colorectal surgery.
  • Experience in training undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Desirable
  • Evidence of formal educational training qualification
  • Management/Audit Experience Essential
  • Able to provide evidence of clinical audit and demonstrate understanding of impact and challenges this brings
  • Ability to support team members in business planning via collaboration and discussion
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of current and future NHS challenges and strategy
  • Desirable
  • Experience of audit management
  • Evidence of innovative approaches to healthcare
  • Academic Achievements, Research, Publications Essential
  • Ability to demonstrate personal experience of clinical research and describe and discuss finding and impact
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical /surgical problems
  • Experience of research, presentations to learned societies on topics related to surgery

    The operating sessions will be based at Newham University Hospital and these sessions will be centred around delivery of high-volume low complexity day case surgery, focusing on developing a world class service in complex benign colorectal and proctology surgery.
