Full Job Description

There are three full-time Consultants involved in the management of patients in the hyper-acute/acute stroke unit and stroke rehabilitation, and two part-time Consultants. The new Consultant will augment the service. The Trust currently provides a 24/7 stroke thrombolysis service. Currently, there are 7 one-stop TIA clinics per week and 'high-risk TIA' patients are also seen in the unit daily.

Weekend ward rounds are undertaken in both hyper-acute/acute stroke and stroke rehabilitation units. The stroke unit is fully equipped with all investigation facilities (portable echo/TOE, carotid duplex, 7-day ECG monitoring, and trans-cranial Doppler).

There is a rapid response stroke team consisting of stroke specialist nurses, Trust Grade physicians in Stroke Medicine, and supervised by the Stroke Consultant.

All in-patients and TIA clinics are in the newly built modern Russells Hall Hospital (Dudley NHS Foundation Trust), although a Rehabilitation Centre is situated at Corbett Hospital (Day Unit).

Main duties of the job

Perform 3 clinics per week (2 TIA clinics and 1 clinic in stroke rehabilitation)

Participate in 24/7 stroke thrombolysis Rota and supervise the middle grade doctors and specialist nurses.

In-patient care for patients in hyper-acute, acute stroke unit and stroke rehabilitation unit (also 1:6 weekend ward round for stroke patients).

Participate in medical audit, clinical governance with particular reference to the stroke pathway.

Participate in stroke and vascular meetings run alongside vascular surgeons and radiologists.
