Full Job Description

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic and ambitious team with a shared vision of improving standards of Oral Medicine care. This newly established 10 PA post reflects the need to develop and enhance secondary and tertiary Oral Medicine services in Leeds and surrounding areas. The post is offered by the Leeds Dental Institute in partnership with the School of Dentistry at the University of Leeds reflecting the key role of education in workforce professional development for students and registrants.

The successful applicant must hold full registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) and be on the Specialist list for Oral Medicine or within 6 months of CCST at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the GDC Specialist List at the point of taking up the post.

Main duties of the job

A commitment to teaching and training the workforce is essential. The role will include opportunities to work within a team to develop quality improvement and leadership skills., 2.1 The post is an appointment for an Oral Medicine Consultant with the objectives:
1. Deliver a consultant-led Oral Medicine clinical service across the breadth of specialist practice as part of an integrated team of Oral Medicine specialists.

2. Have an important role in education and workforce development.

3. Have a commitment to personal development aligned with the priorities of the Oral Medicine team.

  • BDS, BChD or equivalent (registrable dental degree).

  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent.

  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Oral Medicine or equivalent before commencing the post.

  • Eligible for full registration with the GDC at time of appointment.

  • On the GDC Specialist List in Oral Medicine (or within 6 months of eligibility for inclusion from date of interview). YOUR GDC NUMBER MUST BE STATED IN YOUR APPLCATION.

  • Eligibility to work in the UK.

  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely.


  • Desirable
  • Medical degree.

  • Relevant Postgraduate qualification or equivalent.

  • Full registration with the GMC (with a licence to practise).

    Essential
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Oral Medicine.

  • Previous experience of clinical supervision of postgraduate and undergraduate dental students.

  • Understanding of current issues in the NHS.

  • Well organised and skilled in good time management.

  • Effective interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.

  • Hold full GDC Registration with a license to practice.

  • Entry on the GDC Specialist Register via:

  • CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process

  • Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
    Essential
  • Successful completion of an SAC-approved training programme in Oral Medicine, or within 6 months of completion, or equivalent.

  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.

  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.

  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.


  • Desirable
  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals.

  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.

  • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
