Full Job Description

This exciting vacancy is for an 8 session Consultant in Palliative Medicine. The job plan will consist of6.5 sessions of Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 sessions of Supporting Professional Activities per week. The post will be based between Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Wirral Hospice St John's (hosted by Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust). Cross sector working will include support to the Community Specialist Palliative Care Team (employed by Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust), undertaking outpatient palliative medicine clinics at Wirral Hospice St John's, and hospital advisory palliative medicine as a member of the Supportive and Palliative Care Team. A system of rotational job plans will allow all Consultants in Palliative Medicine experience of working within the full range of palliative medicine service provision across WUTH and Wirral Hospice St Johns, including periods of clinical responsibility for patients within the hospice specialist inpatient unit.

  • Day to day responsibility for palliative care patient management in the hospital advisory Supportive and Palliative Care Team, including provision of senior reviews to Supportive Care Unit.
  • Responsibility for outpatient clinic patient caseload with focus on collaborative partnership working across primary and secondary care systems and shared decision making.
  • On-call responsibility for patient management for Wirral Hospice St John's inpatient unit, as well as provision of advice via 24/7 telephone advice line and to Palliative Care Clinical Specialist Nurses.
  • Support education and training of junior medical staff/medical students.
  • Participate in the development of services for Supportive and Palliative Care.
