Full Job Description

This is an exciting time to join the Acute Medicine and Medicine Specialties Teams at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. The aspirations for our patient focused services are bold. We are a forward thinking team, that prides itself on providing high quality clinical care. We aim to have a true 7 day service and, to realise that aim, we are increasing our consultant physician workforce by 50% over the next 2 years. There will also be a marked increase in junior medical and other clinical staff to support this development. We are looking for dynamic and innovative individuals to enhance and develop Respiratory Services in line with our vision to be the local provider of choice for respiratory services, including the ward and Respiratory Support Units, our large lung cancer service, procedures such as bronchoscopy and EBUS and our general respiratory clinics. This vision is underpinned by investments in our radiological infrastructure and our physiology lung function and sleep diagnostic services. Main duties of the job Successful candidates will join a team of 11 respiratory consultants and 1 SAS doctor across our two acute sites. The service is supported by a large team of specialist respiratory nurses and diagnostic services across our main hospital sites and one of our community hospitals. Post holders will undertake outpatient clinics at their main base site and also cover clinics at one of our community hospitals. Clinics are general respiratory clinics and cancer clinics. There are also opportunities for specialist clinics for those wanting to develop a subspecialist interest. The ward and RSU are covered via a weekly specialty rota (in -hours only) and the post holder will take part in an unselected medical on-call rota on the Acute Medical Unit alongside physician colleagues and acute care physicians. Procedures (EBUS, Bronchoscopy and Pleural work) are undertaken on our main acute sites and supported by the medical day units. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes. Full Job Descriptions can be found in the adverts supporting documents, The posts are designed to support existing Respiratory services and evolving new patterns of working.The post holders will join the existing consultants on each of the acute sites.The Respiratory department provides specialist investigations and treatment for a wide range of Respiratory conditions with programmes for the management of asthma, care of COPD, diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer sleep disordered breathing, pleural disease, interstitial lung disease and infections. There are dedicated lists in pleural disease (including IPC), bronchoscopy and EBUS (at University Hospital of North Durham), with close links to cardiothoracic surgery at James Cook University Hospital and Newcastle. The Respiratory department runs MDTs in lung cancer and SPN, and links to the ILD regional MDT, regional home ventilation team and the regional difficult asthma service in Newcastle. In-patient care is delivered on a dedicated respiratory ward of 30 beds including a separate 8 bedded Acute Respiratory Unit, accommodating NIV, high flow nasal oxygen and in-patient pleural procedures soon to be opened. All in-patients are looked after by a respiratory physician of the week model, which is currently 1:6 rotation. In addition we are developing a community-based role to bring respiratory care closer to home. As part of a large integrated care organisation we are involved with the Respiratory Rightcare project with community services to enhance respiratory care in community practice. This is a regional initiative associated with the ICP for the North East.

  • Certificate of Medical Education, Clinical Skills able to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within the service
  • Able to demonstrate full competence in bronchoscopy, pleural ultrasound and procedures
  • Able to demonstrate evidence of NHS management skills i.e. ability to organize own work. Ability to delegate appropriately to trainee/non-consultant
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills
  • Experience of supervising trainees
  • Experience and understanding of audit and conducting clinical audit

  • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical to support decision making
  • Statutory Registration Essential
  • Full and specialist registration with GMC (and Licence to Practice).
  • Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or should have attained or be within 6 months of attaining CCT in Specialty at time of interview.
