Full Job Description

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is seeking to recruit a Consultant Spinal Deformity Surgeon to maintain capacity and improve delivery of high-quality spinal surgery to fill from the retirement of a Spinal Deformity Surgeon. At the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, the Consultant would join a surgical team of eight orthopaedic and three neurosurgical spinal surgeons, working with colleagues to ensure and enhance effective patient centred care.

The department undertakes a comprehensive range of surgical procedures with particular expertise in reconstructive surgery for tumour, trauma, infection, and deformity., The post is expected to attract 10 PA's with an on-call commitment of approximately 1:11 providing emergency routine spinal care to Birmingham and Worcestershire, and beyond.

This post is a replacement post for a retiring senior surgeon who subspecialised in complex paediatric spinal reconstruction surgery. The workload reflects that. Consequently, it is essential that the applicant is a well experienced Consultant Spinal Surgeon with subspecialty interest and proven track record over several years of delivering high quality effective care to complex paediatric spinal deformity patients. The surgeon was also skilled and experienced in anterior spinal surgery for adults and paediatric patients and the Appointee would preferably be able to deliver this as well.

The department is looking for someone who can help lead clinical and non-clinical care in a challenging national environment. Consequently, it is desirable that the applicant have recent Consultant experience of leading services (Clinical Lead or similar)., The department is looking to grow its adult deformity service and consequently the applicant would preferably have experience for a number of years in leading in adult deformity spinal surgery.

The individual appointed to the post will have competed orthopaedic training and have completed Spinal fellowship with particular interest in adult and paediatric spinal deformity surgery. They will have at least 5 years of consultant practice delivering and leading in-patient and out-patient paediatric spinal surgery, preferably more than 8. They will join the Spinal On-Call rota providing cover to the West Midlands and Worcestershire. Currently, on call intensity is 1:10. The spinal on-call rota is separate to the rest of the hospital therefore, there is no requirement to cover orthopaedic patients with non-spinal conditions.
