Full Job Description

The successful candidate will have a special interest in lower limb primary arthroplasty (including robotics) and revision hip surgery. Elective care currently takes place at Walsall Manor Hospital with future plans for elective services at a dedicated elective hub at Cannock Hospital. For trauma care they will join an approximately one in 9 orthopaedic trauma rota based at the Walsall Manor Hospital. It is expected that the successful candidate will also have specialist interest and experience in complex lower limb trauma including management of periprosthetic fractures. Over the last three years the department has seen significant activity and improvement in teaching innovation and research with involvement in multiple in house and national multicentre studies. It has become one of the most popular departments for training placements amongst the trainees of the West Midlands School of surgery orthopaedics training program. It is hence expected that the successful candidate will keep
pace with these standards and actively contribute to the departmental research and teaching activities within their role.

Walsall Manor Hospital is going through an exciting phase of evolution, including greater academic and clinical collaboration with our neighbouring Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and University of Wolverhampton. £30 million in funding has been secured for a dedicated Black Country elective centre at the Cannock Hospital site which will substantially increase elective orthopaedic capacity and volume. Currently with three laminar flow theatres (two have been newly refurbished with state of the art equipment), the trust has recently funding for Robotic surgery within the department. It has ambitions to become regional leaders at the forefront of clinical innovation and research., Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides a first class integrated acute and community healthcare service within the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. It employs more than 4,000 staff with a combined total income of just over £220m. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services with 550 acute beds.

£50m has been invested in healthcare services over the last 12 months across the hospital estate which includes two new, state-of-the-art MRI scanners, the creation of a new 22 bedded Intensive Care Unit a new Obstetric Theatre and expansion of the Neonatal Unit.

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Department at the Manor Hospital, Walsall comprises 54 adult beds on 2 modern wards, one designated to Trauma the other for Elective Orthopaedic cases. There are 14 paediatric beds shared with other surgical specialties. There are 3 modern well equipped theatres with laminar flow designated for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery tow which have been newly refurbished.

The department provides a varied and wide experience in Trauma Surgery and practically all spheres of elective orthopaedics.
