RESPECT - COMPASSION - TEAMWORK - PROFESSIONALISM, The successful candidate will have a special interest in lower limb primary arthroplasty (including robotics) and revision hip surgery. Elective care currently takes place at Walsall Manor Hospital with future plans for elective services at a dedicated elective hub at Cannock Hospital. For trauma care they will join an approximately one in 9 orthopaedic trauma rota based at the Walsall Manor Hospital. It is expected that the successful candidate will also have specialist interest and experience in complex lower limb trauma including management of periprosthetic fractures.

Over the last three years the department has seen significant activity and improvement in teaching innovation and research with involvement in multiple in house and national multicentre studies. It has become one of the most popular departments for training placements amongst the trainees of the West Midlands School of surgery orthopaedics training program. It is hence expected that the successful candidate will keep pace with these standards and actively contribute to the departmental research and teaching activities within their role., The working week this full-time Consultant post is comprised of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs). Typically, a Consultant will spend 8.5 PAs on Direct Clinical Care with 1.5 PAs on Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). Additional PA can be negotiated following the commitment of the successful candidate in the post, additional SPAs are offered as required for formal teaching, clinical governance, management activities and activities outside the Trust for regional, national societies and Royal College etc. With the trusts strategic emphasis in increasing research activity, additional PA for contribution to Trust roles or other duties such as research will be encouraged and supported.
For this post "direct clinical care" (DCC) (work relating directly to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of illness) includes theatre work, pre and post-operative visiting, emergency work, outpatient pre-assessment activities, and administration directly related to the above, day time and out of hours. "Supporting professional activities" (SPA) (that underpin direct clinical care) include participation in training, medical education, continuous professional development, formal teaching, audit, clinical management and local clinical governance activities. The rota is organised on a 7 week cycle.

    We are looking to appoint a dynamic and highly motivated consultant orthopaedic surgeon with special interest in lower limb primary and revision arthroplasty and trauma surgery to work in our innovative and ambitious Trauma & Orthopaedic department. The successful candidate is expected to have substantial training in primary and revision arthroplasty surgery at fellowship level along with being on the specialist register. The successful candidate will join the Trauma on call rota in our busy district general hospital.

    Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. It employs more than 4,000 staff with a combined total income of just over £220m. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services with 550 acute beds.
    £50m has been invested in healthcare services over the last 12 months across the hospital estate which includes two new, state-of-the-art MRI scanners, the creation of a new 22 bedded Intensive Care Unit a new Obstetric Theatre and expansion of the Neonatal Unit.
    The Trauma and Orthopaedic Department at the Manor Hospital, Walsall comprises 54 adult beds on 2 modern wards, one designated to Trauma the other for Elective Orthopaedic cases. There are 14 paediatric beds shared with other surgical specialties. There are 3 modern well equipped theatres with laminar flow designated for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery tow which have been newly refurbished.
    The department provides a varied and wide experience in Trauma Surgery and practically all spheres of elective orthopaedics.
