Full Job Description

Barts Health NHS Trust has a vision to be a high performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east Londonand beyond. Our Ophthalmology Department provides tertiary services to the population of Northeast London and works collaboratively with other ophthalmology teams at the other major hospitals in London.

We are currently seeking a motivated consultant to take up the position of Consultant Ophthalmologist, with sub-specialty interest in Medical Retina.

This is an important post within the department, and we are hoping to recruit an innovative and committed colleague who is keen to work with the wider team to develop the service at The Royal London Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • To support the running of the Medical Retina service across Barts Health taking a lead role at The Royal London Hospital (RLH).

  • Consultants' lists are set at between 6/9 patients per session for standard new/follow-up, and a maximum of 12 injection patients per session that are supported by 2 MR injection nurses. The consultant is also expected to oversee/support the junior doctors and optometrist's clinic profiles.

  • To be involved in the strategic planning and development of the Medical Retina service at RLH.

  • To have responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of their departments. You will participate in the three tier RLH on-call rota (1 in 7) as the third tier, non-resident consultant support.

  • To assume responsibility both singularly and corporately for the management of the junior medical staff.

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain's leading healthcare providers.

  • The Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients.

Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together.

We strive to live by our WeCare values and are committed to promoting inclusion, where every staff member has a sense of belonging. We value our differences and fully advocate, cultivate and support an inclusive working environment.
