Applications are invitedfor a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in Lower LimbArthroplasty based at Barnsley Hospital.

The Orthopaedic department currentlyhas twelve substantive consultants an. The service provides a comprehensiveElective and Trauma service to a population of approx 225,000.

The departmentalso has one part time consultant providing specialist paediatric services fromSheffield Childrens Hospital.

The Trust has 47 inpatient orthopaedic beds, 28trauma and 16 elective, three laminar flow theatres dedicated to Orthopaedicswith a fourth laminar flow available for emergency work and a dedicated daysurgery unit.

There is also exciting work on going for an additional laminarflow theatre.

At Barnsley we are in partnership with localTrusts; Doncaster and Rotherham to utilise the Mexborough Elective OrthopaedicCentre.

This comprises of two orthopaedic theatres with a dedicated greenpathway aimed to provide high levels of productivity and efficiency.

Orthopaedic surgeryis a high priority within the Barnsley Health Community as over half of theover 55 population has a musculo-skeletal problem.

The development ofservices will continue in coming years. The intention of the Trust is toincrease investment in orthopaedics to continue to support the reductions inpatient access times to continue to meet Government targets, and to ensure thatpatients have access to the latest developments in this increasing area oforthopaedic surgery.

Main duties of the job

The successfulcandidate, working in the Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and theRotherham NHS Foundation Trust, will be expected to be aware of local policiesand procedures and to take note of standing orders, strategic and financialinstructions, and amendments to protocols as notified.

Additionally, there isan expectation that the appointment would undertake elective theatre sessionswill be at Mexborough Elective Orthopaedic Centre or within Barnsley Hospital.

The detailed job planwill be agreed with the successful candidate on appointment. The successfulapplicant will be contracted to 10 PA s per week on average.

It is anticipatedthat the split of programmed activities will be direct clinical care and supportingprofessional activities to ensure GMC revalidation.

Additional PAs can be negotiated and agreed with the Divisional Director and ClinicalLead to reflect additional management and professional responsibilities.

It is anticipatedthat following consultation with him / her the work programme of the postholdermay change as services develop in line with the needs of the Trust.

  • Full registration with GMC and FRCS (or equivalent). On Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCST.

  • NJR registration

  • Recognised & Reputed post-CCT arthroplasty fellowship with evidence of supervised (primary / complex and revision hip and knee arthroplasty) and unsupervised lists and clinics

  • Holder of diplomas or qualifications pertinent to Orthopaedic practice.

  • ATLS qualified (Current)


  • Experience

    Essential
  • Extensive training and broad experience in Orthopaedics and Trauma.

  • Satisfactory completion of training portfolio established by appropriate college or equivalent as determined by college assessor.

  • Familiarity with issues of NHS service provision, organisation and development.

  • Comprehensive experience at a senior level in Orthopaedics and Trauma, Ability to maintain an up to date service.
