Full Job Description
The Children's Hospital Oxford (CHOX) at the John Radcliffe Hospital (JRH) Campus is the Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) providing tertiary haematology/oncology services for designated Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCUs) in Swindon, Reading, Milton Keynes, High Wycombe/Stoke Mandeville and Slough (Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospital). The unit has excellent relationships with paediatricians in the POSCUs. Outreach clinics for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology are held at each of the POSCUs. Inpatient facilities are based on Kamran's Ward at the Children's Hospital Oxford. This dedicated 9-bedded ward provides care for patients requiring chemotherapy or for the management of treatment- or disease-related complications. Other wards within the hospital are used to accommodate outliers when required. All surgical, laboratory and radiological services are co- located in the JRH site. All Paediatric Haematology and Paediatric Oncology services are based at the JRH, with integrated oncology and surgical services. Radiotherapy is based at the Churchill Hospital; 1.5 miles from the JR. There are approximately 115 new referrals per year of children with malignant disease. The number of referrals has been increasing year on year., The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of patients with haemato oncological malignancies aged 0 - 19 years and also manage non malignant haematology patients and haemoglobinopathy patients (2PA) . The post holder will participate in the 1 in 6 "consultant of the week" system, providing cross cover for in-patient activity, dealing with new referrals, initial diagnostic work-up, planning and delivery of treatment and care. The post-holder will work as an integral member of the team, attending and contributing to the established Oxford multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings. The post-holder will share responsibilities to review patients on the day unit, supporting the fellows and staff grades, and independently lead outpatient clinics. The postholder will provide advice and support to the other paediatric specialists within CHOX Children's Services and paediatricians within the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance. Chemotherapy prescribing The Post holder will prescribe SACT ( systemic anti cancer therapy) as per the guidelines in the prescribing policy.Outpatient Care: On-treatment outpatient care is delivered on Kamran's Day Care, a separate area for the administration of chemotherapy, blood products and assessment of patients. The successful candidate will be expected to see patients and support the clinical fellows/speciality doctors in Day Care. Follow-up clinics for patients not on active treatment occur in the dedicated Children's Outpatients. Children's Outpatients is also the site for haematology follow up and benign haematology clinics, e.g. haemoglobinopathy. A large and active Paediatric Haemophilia service is based in the outpatients clinic at CHOX The service has weekly malignant haematology multidisciplinary team (MDT), solid tumour & lymphoma, Teenage and Young Adult (TYA), psycho-oncology, neuro-oncology and sarcoma meetings. Patients are reviewed and management plans enacted at these meetings. All MDTs are well supported by integrated surgical oncology, pathology and diagnostic radiology teams.

- Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) and be on the specialist register, or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. This should be in paediatric haematology or oncology
- Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills Desirable criteria
- Higher medical degree
- FRCPath, Is able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training
- CSAC can advise here. As the attached Representative you will be a member of the relevant subspeciality
- Valid APLS and NLS
- Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
- Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems. Desirable criteria
- Experience working in NHS
- Wider experience, research, and training, in providing subspecialty service (if applicable.), Willing to work unsupervised and make decisions
- Good communication skills, including communicating bad news
- Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively
- Meets the requirements of the GMC's 'Good Medical Practice'
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit/QI project, understanding the role of these in improving the medical practice
- Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence, so as to improve clinical outcomes
- Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff
- Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS
- Understanding of management issues including medical management, clinical governance, service planning, and quality improvement
- Good spoken and written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
