Full Job Description

  • Daily work on HASU including attending stroke calls and assessing patients for thrombolysis/thrombectomy
  • Daily TIA clinics
  • OP stroke clinic (held weekly but shared between colleagues). There is potential to expand this service including virtual and face to face appointments
  • Attendance at daily board rounds and MDTs
  • Please note that all the above duties are shared between colleagues to ensure continuity of care for patients and to allow individuals to develop their own sub speciality interest
  • On Call Commitment: 1 in 7 weekends and 1 in 7 weekdays. Category A, 5% supplement. There is an expectation that patients will receive a consultant review as soon as possible - either on the day of admission or on the following morning. All stroke physicians have access to secretarial support, shared office space and IT equipment which includes a laptop to support telemedicine on call. The stroke team have access to CT and MR imaging. Stroke medicine is a hyperacute speciality. The timetable is necessarily flexible and flexibility would be expected of any successful appointee. Expected weekday working hours are 8am to 5pm. The ward sessions are varied and may include hyperacute work at the 'front door', thrombectomy calls, ward rounds, regular MDTs and daily board rounds. The stroke team is supported by dedicated stroke nurse specialists and a therapy team. Additional work includes phone triage of some TIA referrals

There is a reconfiguration of stroke services across West Sussex underway. From 2027, St Richards Hospital will host the designated Acute Stroke Centre for West Sussex with work underway to create a new purpose-built unit on that hospital site. The stroke service at Worthing will move to St Richard's Hospital at that time and be hosted in the new purpose-built facility. This post will be based at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester from then. Alongside the build, the ICB / Trust is investing heavily in expanding the workforce across stroke services and the associated disciplines to deliver this expanded and redesigned service. The Royal Sussex County Hospital is a Comprehensive Stroke Centre, with neurology, neurosurgery and neurophysiology on site. It provides the mechanical thrombectomy service to Sussex patients on weekdays. We also work with the University Hospital Southampton to provide a MT service at weekends for patients attending Worthing pending the expansion of our local service, planned for 2025
