Full Job Description

Our elective upper GI workload includes all aspects of biliary work; bariatric surgery; anti-reflux surgery; and Heller's myotomies. We have an established comprehensive bariatric MDT, primary and revisional bariatric surgery. We deal with all types of hernia repairs including abdominal wall reconstruction and have an established Complex Abdominal Wall MDT. We provide in-house oesophageal physiology studies.

Elective care is delivered across multiple sites. We are the largest trust by geography in the country.

We are a very high-volume emergency cholecystectomy service and competence in this is essential. We are in the top three Trusts nationally for day case fundoplication and cholecystectomies.

We have a well-established robotic surgery programme within the Trust. We have 2 DaVinci robot platforms with one available for the upper GI team. Training will be available to those interested.

A job plan of 10 PAs will be made up of direct/virtual clinical contact including outpatient activity, theatre, endoscopy, emergency work and ACU work along with admin and SPA time. The successful candidate will be on the Upper GI rota.

The successful candidate should have undergone specialist training in upper gastrointestinal surgery and laparoscopic surgery and be competent in emergency surgery. JAG accreditation for upper GI endoscopies is also expected.

We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, in addition to our state-of-the-art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England. We also care for people in their homes and provide services from facilities in local communities such as health centres. We give people greater choice and control over their care to help them to live independently at home and avoid hospital admission where appropriate. High quality patient care is at the heart of everything we do and we strive to ensure every single patient and service user has an exceptional experience with us. We have one of the most extensive patient experience programmes of any trust in England.

As part of its pursuit of excellence, the Trust has introduced a clinically-based management structure to ensure patient care and medical interests always drive decision-making. The consultant body is both cohesive and innovative and a number of senior clinicians are prominent nationally.
