Full Job Description

  • Overall responsibility for all T&H publishing contracts, including management of the contracts workflow process;
  • Providing legal advice, and where necessary, handling contractual disputes;
  • Advising on commercial terms and opportunities and handling negotiations as appropriate;
  • Ensuring contractual coherence and awareness from commissioning stage to publication and co-edition sales by providing a key link between the Editorial, Production, International Rights, and Communications Departments;
  • Develop and roll out new template agreements, terms and conditions, policies and procedures, supporting the business on its legal requirements;
  • Advising the Picture Research department on copyright matters;
  • Line management of a small team.

  • World-renowned illustrated publisher Thames & Hudson is looking for an energetic Contracts Lawyer with a passion for the visual arts and a record of negotiating, drafting, and reviewing all types of publishing agreements. With titles across all areas of visual creativity - the arts, architecture, design, photography, fashion, film, and music - as well as history, archaeology, popular culture and children's non-fiction, this role provides an exciting opportunity for an experienced contracts lawyer to work across a unique and diverse publishing list. The ideal candidate is someone with previous arts publishing experience, a positive and enthusiastic attitude to work, and strong interpersonal and communication skills. Reporting to the Head of Legal, you will play a key role in supporting and advising the business on all contractual and related matters.,
  • Qualified lawyer;
  • Comprehensive understanding of the entire book publishing process;
  • Substantial experience working in book publishing and, in particular, arts publishing.
  • Some knowledge of audio, TV/ film agreements would be an advantage;
  • Strong knowledge of publishing agreements and copyright law;
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills with authors, literary agents, publishers, and business owners;
  • Ability to think strategically and to exercise sound, independent judgment;
  • Ability to identify risks and to protect the best interests of Thames & Hudson;
  • Line management experience.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with directors, the senior management team and in-house staff at all levels;
  • Confidence in communicating effectively with customers and other external third-parties;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team;
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills;
  • Meticulous attention to detail;
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure;
  • Trustworthy, professional and discreet.
