Full Job Description

We are looking for individuals who can work at pace to make a difference to the lives of people who have lost family members, loved ones or friends. This role requires being able to deliver the legal duties required compassionately, whilst being personally, emotionally resilient when dealing with what may be difficult or traumatic situations.
Key duties of a Coroner's Officer include:

  • Be the single point of contact for bereaved families an provide them with regular updates

  • Assist the Coroner in their investigations

  • Manage your own caseload from referral to inquest

  • Work with other key stakeholders and partners: doctors, pathologists to obtain evidence for the coronial investigations

    This is a hugely rewarding role that is of benefit to the residents of Surrey. Your excellent customer service and communication skills will tie in with your ability to relate to people from backgrounds which reflect the diversity of the people who live and work in Surrey.

  • Shortlisting Criteria
    To be considered for shortlisting for this position, your application will clearly evidence the following:
  • Experience of working within a coronial service, the police, legal profession or other investigatory or regulatory profession

  • Analytically minded in order to perform this investigation driven role

  • Experience of providing high levels of customer care and professionalism to members of the public

  • Ability to write well structured, clear and concise reports using information gathered from multiple sources (for example, from families, GPs, the police or other health professionals)

  • Excellent IT skills and the ability to follow defined processes in a timely manner


  • The role holder will need to have the willingness and ability to travel around the county to meet the demands of the role.

    The starting salary for this role is £35,730 per annum for working 36 hours per week.
    We are currently recruiting for a Coroner's Officer to join us in our fantastic team, based in Woking. As a Coroner's Officer you will provide a high-quality service to bereaved families by progressing cases efficiently and with empathy.
