Full Job Description
Are you interested in representative and inclusive histories about Manchester and its industrial development? Can you turn research into engaging and accessible content for a variety of audiences?, As Legacies of Enslavement Curator, you will ensure the lived experiences, voices and perspectives of African descendant and diaspora communities are central to the exhibition and wider programme's research and content development. You will lead the research and delivery of content relating to three key areas: the legacies of enslavement, remembrance and commemoration, and the contemporary experiences of Black Manchester communities. You will also play a key role in ensuring that content and learnings from this project shape the development of future galleries and programming at the museum and across SMG., Working with a world-leading museum group that offers access to truly unique environments and collections, you'll benefit from the perks listed below, as well as full support for life events such as parental and adoption leave, sickness, and career breaks.

You will bring experience of carrying out research and thinking creatively to turn this into engaging content for audiences. Your interpersonal skills will enable you to build strong relationships with a range of partners, from academic researchers to community collaborators. You may bring these skills and qualities, and this experience, from non-museum or academic settings.
At the Science Museum Group (SMG), we're working to make our collections and stories more inclusive, in line with our organisational value to be Open for All. As part of this work, a major special exhibition and events programme about Manchester, cotton and enslavement, will launch in 2027 at the Science and Industry Museum (SIM) in Manchester. The project, which will be delivered in partnership with the Scott Trust Legacies of Enslavement Programme, will reveal how transatlantic slavery shaped the city's growth, and how the legacies of these histories continue to impact Manchester, the world, and lives today. We are looking for a Curator to play a key role in shaping research and content for this the important project.
