This role is available full-time for 37 hours per week or part-time with a minimum coverage of 20 hours

This role is based in the office with opportunities to work from home, typically one day per week.

As a Data Scientist at HMGCC, you'll work closely with other technical specialists in security research and software or data engineering to understand and prioritise problems where Data Science can add value. You'll develop solutions tailored to meet HMGCC's unique needs and use dedicated research time to focus on experimenting; using state-of-the-art techniques to understand and maximise the value of potential solutions.

Working in Cyber Security, you will extract knowledge and insights from noisy, structured and unstructured data. The work is intellectually stimulating and varied, using Red Team methodology in security research working in small teams. You'll develop data science tools and capabilities, for example to assist in detecting vulnerabilities in software and hardware, to enable teams to work more efficiently, securing a wide variety of technologies. You will work on projects ranging from short-term security assessments to long-term in-depth analysis of complex systems. You will work across a range of specialist domains (e.g. natural language processing, computer vision) utilising your knowledge and skills to maximise opportunities and minimise risks. You'll receive investment in your continued professional development through technical training, professional accreditation, mentoring, and on the job training. As you progress through your career, there are also opportunities for overseas travel
for training and conferences.

We use the Government Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework (formerly the Digital Data and Technology profession capability framework) to provide guidance and tools to support your development, recognise and reward your specialist expertise.,

  • Identify efficient and effective ways to use Data Science to tackle business and organisational challenges, applying innovative techniques; with a focus on the Cyber Security mission.

  • Enjoy working in multidisciplinary teams, to understand where Data Science can add value to support engineering processes and decision-making, in order to create impact.

  • Source, access, manipulate, and engineer data processes with data that typically have characteristics of volume, velocity and variety, and veracity.

  • Build credible statistical models from the data and use best coding practices to generate reproducible work.

  • Proactively use an evolving range of data analysis and Data Science tools and techniques, and have the ability to adapt to unplanned changes, overcome obstacles, and see tasks through to completion.

  • Enjoy working with a range of experts, knowing when to draw on their expertise to help deliver project requirements.

    Using programming experience to build scalable and robust Data Science products.

  • Analysing and interpreting a range of data types.

  • Data manipulation and data visualisation to share Data Science products clearly.

  • Knowledge and experience in one of the following areas: machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, graph theory, applied statistics, or in a related specialist role.


  • To strengthen your application, it would be beneficial if you also have experience in and be able to show evidence in your application of:
  • The application of Data Science to cyber security problems, in anything from vulnerability analysis support, to debugging software and/or network traffic analysis.

  • Software engineering experience in machine learning.
