Full Job Description
We are looking for an experienced Database Engineer with a strong background in database administration, within an AWS environment.,
- RDS Management: Build and manage RDS instances using Terraform within GitLab. This involves setting up infrastructure, ensuring security, and continuously enhancing systems to meet operational requirements.
- Database Tasks: Plan and execute database upgrades, migrations, and modernisation efforts.
- Project Involvement: Contribute significantly to the development and deployment of small-to-medium features, occasionally leading or participating in multi-person projects.
- Troubleshooting: Identify, diagnose, and resolve issues across development, non-production, and production environments.
- System Maintenance: Maintain and improve existing solutions, with a focus on automated pipelines to ensure robust, reliable, and fault-tolerant systems.
- Code Review: Conduct code reviews to ensure quality, efficiency, and adherence to best practices.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with team members, providing support and constructive feedback.
- Goal Alignment: Understand and align with both the team's and the broader software engineering goals, planning work to achieve these objectives.
- On-call Support: Participate in an on-call rota to support our production database estate., Databases: PostgreSQL, Babelfish Extension for Aurora PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server
- AWS: RDS, EC2, S3, ECS, ECR, VPC, IAM, Lambda, Quicksight, and more
- Infrastructure: GitLab, Terraform, Docker
- Monitoring: Dynatrace, AWS CloudWatch, AWS Performance Insights
- Languages: Bash, Python, SQL
- Issue/Incident Tracking: Jira, Service Now
Minimum of 2 years' experience with AWS. - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- Proficiency in managing databases such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, and Microsoft SQL Server.
- Strong SQL skills, including query optimisation experience.
- Ability to investigate and resolve database performance issues promptly, minimising downtime and disruptions.
- Understanding of CI/CD principles and experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitLab CI/CD).
- Confidence in sharing technical knowledge with the team.
- A proactive approach to researching and implementing new tools and products.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies.
- AWS certifications at an associate level or higher are a plus.

The salary for the role of Cloud Database Engineer (Level 3/4) pays up to £55,000p.a. Falling within our pay banding of £27,500 to £61,000, providing a fantastic opportunity for career progression through CDL's clearly defined career framework (https://progression.cdl.co.uk/).
