POST HELD: Safeguarding and Welfare Officer

SALARY SCALE: SO 1

REPORTS TO: AHT- Behaviour Lead / Designated Safeguarding Lead

RESPONSIBILITY OF: DSL, Behaviour support

Riverside Bridge School is a Special School for pupils aged from 4 - 16, which opened in September 2015. This School serves families and pupils in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and neighbouring boroughs. It is closely integrated with Riverside Primary School, which also opened in September 2015 and Riverside School, a mainstream secondary school.

Pupils are admitted within the following categories of special needs:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

  • Profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)

  • Severe learning difficulties (SLD)

  • Wellbeing initiatives such as Feel good Friday, Thankful Thursday, Treaty Tuesday and access to EAP.


  • Although it is desirable that you possess some prior experience of working with pupils or young people with special educational needs, we are also keen for those who may not possess all the skills as yet, but could bring to us a positive "can do" approach and we will train you in the appropriate techniques and strategies.

    Selection Criteria

    We are looking for enthusiastic, committed individual who:

    1) Has experience of working with pupils with special educational needs

    2) Has experience of, or is able to undertake training in safeguarding procedures in our local authority as well as others for any pupils attending school 'out of borough'

    3) Has an understanding and empathy with parents/carers facing difficult times

    4) Has an ability to deal with difficult conversations

    5) Is able to build good relationships with external professionals such as our partners in social care, external therapists and medical teams

    6) Is able to extract details of facts from reports

    7) Is able to work as a member of a team as well as an ability to work independently

    8) Is committed to their own professional development.

    9) Has effective personal organisation, communication and ICT skills.
