Full Job Description

Brighton Depot is responsible for the routine maintenance and replacement of line-side components (wheelsets, traction motors, etc.) for a shared fleet of class 377s and 387s for Southern and Gatwick Express. Brighton has an established, well-performing team and working practices. However, there is an opportunity to bring in some fresh thinking and enhance the development of the team and working practices.

This role plays pivotal part in ensuring our trains are fit for service and performance continually improves for the benefit of our valued passengers.

As the Depot Manager, your role will be to provide leadership to a team of around 160 people to ensure the safe, cost-effective and efficient operation of the Depot. By maintaining our trains, you will be accountable for delivering a safe, reliable and compliant railway in line with SLAs and Quality/Availability targets.

Want to hop on board and join our journey?

We are looking for a visionary leader who can bring out the best in their people, empower them to reach new heights, and be proud of their work. Someone to drive a safety-first culture where safety concerns are identified, challenged, and promptly dealt with across all site activities and subsequently implement safety improvement plans to prevent reoccurrence. You don't necessarily need to know everything about trains either! If you've got transferable engineering experience from similar safety-critical environments and are willing to be a fast learner, we want to hear from you!

  • Experienced people leader, particularly in leading large teams (>100).

  • An understanding of engineering maintenance practices (doesn't necessarily need to be rail but from safety-critical industries).

  • An appreciation of general depot operations, associated safety risks, and mitigations.

  • Experience in helping drive a positive inclusivity and collaboration working culture.

  • Skills:
  • Developed strategic thinking, building solid interdepartmental relationships, and the ability to operate at all levels.

  • Engineering background (apprenticeship, internal training or similar).
