Full Job Description

This is a unique and significant leadership role at the heart of the MoJ’s People Function. The successful candidate will be instrumental in leading and executing a comprehensive strategy to improve the overall experience of the MoJ workforce, that brings together people and expertise from across the Department, Civil Service, and external partners. This role will ensure that MoJ transforms and sets its strategic direction for employee experience and coordinates this across the Civil Service strategies ensuring that we are a model employer. A core strategy will be setting the standards for inclusive workplaces so that we can attract the right people with the right mix of skills and experience, thereby ensuring the department has a diverse workforce that delivers for citizens.
We are looking for an experienced leader with deep HR and employee experience delivery expertise in an operational context, skills, and a track record in building and leading motivated, diverse, skilled teams.
The role holder will need to be enthusiastic about working collaboratively with other operational leaders to help teams deliver complex systems and policy transformation.
The Deputy Director, Employee Experience will lead a geographically dispersed, multidisciplinary team that holds a high-profile agenda focused on the implementation of the commitments set out in the MoJ People Strategy, with a particular focus on building a “culture rooted in our values”.
This is a Nationally based role, This is a challenging role which requires a strong understanding of the legal, political, and social factors that influence the Civil Service and its organisations. The postholder must be a confident, inclusive leader who understand how to build and motivate a high performing team that delivers strategic work and expert advice to support MoJ to deliver its objectives.
MoJ People Function is transforming the way it delivers services for its customers. The successful candidate will be expected to reshape the work of the team to include handling of wider policy issues associated with equality. The role holder will need excellent people and change management skills while delivering an important and complex programme of transformation. As the team evolves, new ways of working will be required; the Deputy Director Employee Experience must role model this change, meeting customers’ needs while building HR capability and developing talent within the team.
The role will involve building strong working relationships and working strategically with senior business leaders. Strong stakeholder management and communication skills are essential, as well as a proven ability to influence at the highest level. The role holder will build and maintain a close network of senior HR professionals and people across the Department and wider Civil Service responsible for ensuring that their culture is one in which Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) is designed in, representative of the public we serve and inclusive allowing everyone to make the most of their talent and be the best of themselves in the workplace. They will also need to work closely with other government Departments to ensure that good practice is shared, and cross-government requirements are met.
The role holder is required to provide expert counsel on sensitive issues, working with senior leaders, internal communications, Press Office, legal and HR specialists to advise at pace. The role also oversees development of the role of the Professional Behaviours Champion, Wellbeing Champion, and implementation of audit requirements.

This role has a minimum assignment duration of 3 years. An assignment duration is the period of time a Senior Civil Servant is expected to remain in the same post to enable them to deliver on the agreed key business outcomes.
