Full Job Description

The postholder will work as part of both the Income and Costing teams supporting the Trust to deliver its financial objectives.

The post will support identifying cost improvement opportunities for both income and expenditure. This will involve implementing mechanisms to report activity information as part of the Elective Recovery Fund and contribute to identifying waste reduction opportunities to support the Trust to close its financial gap.

This will involve analysis, interpretation of complex data and information before recommending and implementing solutions with Service Managers, Clinicians and Clinical Service Unit (CSU) Finance Managers.

The role requires expertise in SQL and data analysis.

The Deputy Finance Manager will work jointly across both the income and costing teams supporting delivery of the agenda for the finance department.

  • Post qualification experience of financial management within a healthcare environment

  • Identifying and proposing cost reduction plans within a healthcare environment

  • Experience of working in a large organisation with complex management structures


  • Desirable
  • Developing / working with a Patient Level Costing / Service Line Reporting system

  • Experience of working with SLAMS / income reporting.

  • Direct line management responsibility for staff

  • Understanding and good working knowledge of financial software packages

  • Understanding of the wider operational functioning of a complex acute hospital and how this impacts on financial issues

  • Understanding and knowledge of the NHS payment scheme

  • Understanding of all of the components of Costing Guidance, including Reference Costs, Education & Training and Costing Transformation Programme.

  • Understanding of the national NHS funding regime and the related interactions between NHS organisations, CCAB professional accountancy qualification or passed Finalist, evidence of further education in relevant discipline or a minimum of 5 years relevant financial experience

  • Degree (minimum or equivalent
