Full Job Description

The Deputy Fire Safety Manager will support the Fire Safety Manager and be the lead for the Fire Safety Advisors.

Working as part of a specialist team this post will deliver a range of fire safety services within NBT.
This post holder will be expected to take a leading role within the team to deliver a highly effective service to staff, to enable them to fulfil their fire safety responsibilities. This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Responsible for ensuring that the Trust is compliant with their legal and statutory requirements and that all fire safety regulations under current codes of practice are addressed across a complex and multi-site organisation.


  • To provide expert specialist and professional fire information service for all capital projects, provide advice to other clients/partners, directors, and senior management of the Trust.


  • To develop and lead on policies, strategies and for implementation of the Trusts' fire compliance annual mandatory programme. To continually improve reporting systems in order to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff. regularly check organisations Intranet website.


  • Supporting the effectiveness of comprehensive fire safety training programme, for all staff levels in the Trust


  • Carry out financial and budgetary responsibilities as part of the fire safety team senior management., The post is office-based but the postholder is expected to spend a large part of the day accessing all parts of the sites.

  • The post will require the post holder to access and spend time on construction sites. This may include working at height and an understanding of Construction Design Management (CDM).

  • Lifting of training equipment and other various items to conduct all aspects of the role.

  • There may be a need to travel to different sites.

  • The postholder will need to be able to accompany others including external stakeholders and interested parties on site visits.

  • As a DSE user, the postholder will use computer equipment for lengthy periods of time each working day., Deputise for Fire Safety Manager when required

  • Assist Trust Fire Safety Manager with the day-to-day management of Fire Safety in NBT

  • Manage fire safety audits and Fire risk assessment.

  • Support Site Directors on Fire Safety matters

  • Assist with the review of fire policies and relevant documentation including leading on some policies and protocols

  • Provide & maintain all records.

  • Ensure legal compliance is being maintained.

  • Planning Quality & Improvement initiatives both short and long term

  • Provide/support Training of NBT staff in line with the Training Needs Analysis (TNA)

  • Undertake visual condition surveys in relation to fire safety e.g. Fire door inspection

    Highly developed specialist knowledge of Fire safety and complex premises.

  • Specialist knowledge obtained through a combination of professional qualification, diplomas and experience in subject matter - to masters equivalent.

  • Registration with Institute of Fire Prevention Officers (IFPO), Institution of Fire Engineers(IFE) or Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM).

  • Hold NEBOSH diploma or NEBOSH Fire Safety and Risk Management certificate, or equivalent Fire training course fire training certification.

  • Hold certification in HTM Fire code.

  • Hold L4 diploma or L3 certification in Fire Safety and prevention.

  • Have a significant understanding of the relationships between various departments in order to ensure coordination of ongoing service delivery across the Trust.

  • Practical application of fire prevention theory, and highly developed specialist detailed knowledge of building fire design and construction

  • People management skills in the day to day running of the team. Responsible for the Fire Safety Advisors (FSA) both employed and contracted consultants.

  • Effective. communication skills, post holder will communicate with staff at all levels including writing formal papers and reports.

  • The ability to understand, characteristics of fire and the science of fire prevention. Practices, guidance and legislation concerning fire safety in relation to health care premises., Working to tight deadlines and adapting to changing priorities
