Full Job Description

This is a fantastic role for an experienced Mechanical Designer with a proven working knowledge of Fired Heaters, to utilise their experience in a supervisory role having the opportunity to further their leadership skills.

As a Principal Mechanical Designer within our Technology and Products group, you will be responsible for delivering complex designs for specialised Fired Heaters across the globe for large scale projects.

You will have the opportunity to work with our highly experienced Fired Heater team within the Reading office as well as with other global teams on international projects. You will be responsible for leading the mechanical design of fired heaters, supporting in the proposal process for new work, producing and controlling man hour budgets, overseeing the production of all drawings and production materials. You will also be expected to support the delivery manager by leading some of the smaller studies.

We provide bespoke and value-added services to the global client base across; feasibility studies for greenfield and brownfield applications, concept through FEED to detailed engineering and supply, site advisory and aftermarket services.,

  • Review all client documentation including specifications, P&ID's etc to ensure compliance and highlight any deviations

  • Oversee and approve production of all drawings including General Arrangements, foundation loading plans, coils, manifolds, cast pressure parts, cast supports, steelwork, insulation, shipping etc

  • Oversee and approve production of all material requisitions for pressure parts, castings, bellows, tube seals, selected instruments, insulation etc. Produce or review all fabrication, equipment and sub-contract requisitions

  • Review of suppliers bids for the above for technical acceptance. Post order review and approval of suppliers documents including insulation, steelwork and pressure part fabrication drawings

  • Respond to technical queries from clients, suppliers, fabricators, and site erection contractors

  • Keep up to date with requirements of international specifications like ASME, ASTM, API, PED, UKCA, EPA etc

  • Maintain and update standard drawings library

  • Maintain and update the groups technical archive

  • Provide support as required to produce layouts for estimating, proposal drawings, man hour budgets etc

  • Contribute to engineering excellence by providing the link between engineering design theory and practical application, translating critical design concepts into workable plans for tangible end-products

  • Plans and carries out technical assignments of substantial variety and complexity

  • Capable of leading assignments which involve a variety of procedures and techniques

  • Calculation of material quantities

  • Occasional visits to job site or supplier premises for data gathering, expediting etc

  • Extensive experience with the Mechanical Design of Fired Heaters

  • An Understanding of relevant international specifications in relation to Fired Heaters

  • Experience supporting in the creation of proposals

  • Previous experience overseeing production of all drawings in regards to a Fired Heater

  • Experience in using CAD and 3D modelling software Microstation, Tekla, E3D etc

  • An understanding of various types of heaters, boilers, WHRU's, HSRG'S, Reformers

  • An understanding of Instrumentation used with Fired Heaters

  • Experience with ASTM/ASME and Euronorm materials, including high temperature alloys

  • Demonstration of customer focus and ability to respond to customer needs whilst achieving project and corporate objectives

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to collaborate at all levels of the business

  • Prepared to take on new tasks and learn new technical subjects / skills High level of awareness and commitment to safety in all aspects of daily work



  • Desirable:
  • Experience in creation and control of man hour budgets

  • Experience in the maintenance of office records & drawings libraries

  • Understanding of Piping and Equipment used with Fired Heaters

  • Experience with international projects

  • Ability to maintain archives in relation to projects
