Full Job Description

You will manage programme needs and ensure we follow Construction Design Management regulations. Your technical skills will be crucial for managing expectations, advancing design work, developing those who look to you for support and guidance, and improving processes to reach project goals. Leading the team, you'll oversee diverse projects, including:

  • Major Maintenance: Managing a high-volume, countywide portfolio of maintenance projects with a budget of approximately £9 million.
  • Transport Strategy Aims and Section 106: Delivering countywide improvements, with schemes up to £500,000, focusing on public realm enhancements and active travel.
  • Local Highway Improvements, 20mph, and Privately Funded Works: Overseeing local improvement projects, including traffic calming and speed limit changes, with budgets up to £50,000.
  • Your role will involve ensuring we use best design practices and maximise contract savings to achieve value for money. You will support the Head of Service by aligning service delivery with council objectives. This involves effective planning, engaging with stakeholders, and managing resources. Establishing a forward pipeline of work over multiple years will be key. You will be expected to line manage and help develop a multi-skilled team of Senior Design Engineers, Assistant Design Engineers and Design technician's apprentices. The existing team is well established and high performing, so previous experience in development and helping others reach their full potential is a must.

You will have a degree in Civil Engineering, or related field, with significant experience in highway design and infrastructure projects. Strong leadership skills with a proven track record of managing a team of industry experts, delivering design and construction projects is needed. You'll be working with our in-house project management team to design and deliver an integrated work programme, so collaboration, enthusiasm, and attention to detail are a must. As well as a focus on delivering value for money and getting it right first time for our communities. You will ensure that health, safety, and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do in our day-to-day activities.

We value our colleagues in Cambridgeshire County Council and have developed a number of benefits in addition to the basics like annual leave, sick pay, pension and mileage…
  • A comprehensive wellbeing package to cover all aspects of wellbeing, both in and out of work, which can also be accessed by your family
  • Buy up to 4 weeks additional annual leave (pro-rata) through our salary sacrifice scheme
  • Take your bank holidays flexibly to better suit your personal circumstances
  • Make Additional Voluntary Contributions (Shared AVCs) to your pension with tax and National Insurance savings
  • Access to development opportunities, apprenticeships and qualified coaches to support your personal and professional growth
  • Paid volunteering hours each year so you can make a positive impact on our community during your normal working day
  • Access to Peer Support Groups through our IDEAL staff equality, diversity and inclusion network
  • Opportunities to nominate and receive Employee Recognition Awards
  • An Our Cambs Rewards account, giving you access to in-store and online discounts as well as our Car Lease and Cycle to Work schemes
