Full Job Description

Applications are invited for a Design Teaching Fellow in the Department of Architecture, available from 1 October 2024. This post is fractional, i.e. 25.3% of full time, c. 9 hours per week, year-round.

This position is designed primarily for practitioners with experience in studio teaching, who are active in design research and up to date professional skills to deliver excellent teaching that benefits from and engages with Cambridge's research-rich environment and is intellectually challenging.

Design Teaching Fellows are responsible for the development and delivery of studio teaching. Working with, and supported by, either the undergraduate Studio Teaching Coordinator or Course Director for MArch, they will develop course content and material in response to changes in the programme or student feedback, and co-ordinate the work of students.

Over the course of the year a Design Teaching Fellow will:

  • Teach up to 9 hours per week during the 9 weeks of term. Studio teachers are expected to attend in Cambridge at least one day a week during term-time.

  • Take part in site visits, up to 12 hours per academic year

  • Assess/examiner students through an end-of-term crit - up to 9 hours for each Design Teaching Fellow each term

  • Take 8 hours per term of Professional Development

  • Attend two departmental away days each academic year

  • Spend 40 hours over the course of the year on preparation work to develop studio teaching. This will include writing briefs, liaising with Director of Studies, arranging external visiting critics, writing termly student reports and liaising with the model making workshop on material requirements for the studio.

  • The Department does not specify when preparation work takes place, but it is anticipated that any days where attendance is required take place within the c. 10 weeks of school term-time. Design Teaching Fellows may be asked to undertake admissions work but this will be remunerated separately, by Department or College as appropriate and is not within the 0.253FTE.

    Candidates for this role must have:
  • a very good first degree or equivalent in Architecture, Engineering or a cognate discipline, with exemption from Part I of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) or equivalent examinations;

  • a postgraduate Diploma, MSc, MArch, MPhil or equivalent qualification carrying exemption from Part II of the RIBA examinations. Please note that a Part III qualification (or equivalent) is preferred.

    experience of studio teaching and current experience as a practice-based architect. Please see page 14 of the attached Further Information document for how to apply. Please note all applications must be made on an individual basis.
