Full Job Description

Kew House School was established in the conviction that there exists an opportunity for a different kind of independent secondary school in London - academically demanding but with a forward-thinking approach to selection criteria, the flexibility of the curriculum, the shape of the school day, and recognition of creativity and talent. A character-selective school, we pride ourselves on the support and care we extend to our 600 pupils whilst striving to add value to their success in all fields of academia, sport, and creativity. Kew House has successfully grown over ten years since its foundation and was recently awarded the ISI "Excellent" grading. We are looking for someone who is willing and able to work with machinery and has experience of working with a range of hand tools. Knowledge and experience of using CAD and CAM would be desirable. It will be necessary for the postholder to be certified in the safe use of machinery in the workshop, and training will be provided for the right candidate. The successful candidate will work closely with the Design and Technology teachers to support the department via preparation of materials for teaching and learning, maintain and replenish stock of materials and new equipment, and maintain existing machinery and equipment in the workshops to ensure that pupils are able to work safely. Facilities The buildings are equipped with modern facilities with interactive smartboards and access to iPads. The DT Workshop and CADCAM room have a wide variety of resources. Curriculum The Design and Technology Department is a successful, growing, and forward-thinking department. We deliver Design and Technology across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 to the very highest level, with pupils gaining access to the latest industry standard software applications. These include Adobe Creative Cloud, 2D Design, and Solidworks 3D CAD software. The department is a strong team, with each member playing a key role in the development of creative and enriching schemes of work. Opportunities are offered to pupils who require additional support or who belong to our Gifted and Talented cohort. The school's aim is to provide a rich and broad education to all pupils, whatever their specialism. Whilst we aim to achieve the highest academic results for each pupil, we do not serve as an examination "factory". Extra-Curricular The department runs a Formula 24 club, whereby students build and race a kit car of their own design and other design-related clubs such as CAD club and Skateboarding Club. The duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining adequate levels of stock/materials/equipment for the department
  • Advising pupils on the safe and proper use of tools and equipment, and on the correct and safe way to carry out learning activities (in conjunction with teaching staff)
  • Preparing equipment and materials in classrooms for practical exercises, running trials, demonstrations, and helping pupils with learning activities as appropriate
  • Ensuring that equipment is maintained and in good working order
  • Assisting with the organisation of departmental trips
  • Assisting during Design and Technology lessons when required
  • The successful candidate will:
  • Have a good working knowledge of Design and Technology
  • Be organised and methodical
  • Be a team player
  • Be professional, with excellent communication and administration skills
