Full Job Description

An opportunity is available for two Development & Compliance Managers based at the National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) Control Centre in Castle Donington & Cardiff, one at each location.

Reporting to Control Team Managers, the post-holders will be responsible for the development of people within the Control teams, as well as ensuring we are compliant with policies and processes, whilst operating safely and efficiently.

The unique environment and operations of the Control Centres creates a need for some bespoke training and development that has to be delivered within the teams, as well as by working with the National Grid Training teams, and any other training providers. With a passion for leading people and helping them to succeed, you'll be responsible for ensuring the ongoing delivery of that development and training.

Our Trainee Control Engineer scheme is essential to the future and growth of our Control Teams, along with the recruitment and development of experienced people who join the teams directly and then require a development programme to help them integrate into their new role. You'll be responsible for managing those people and their journey from when they join our teams onwards. You'll also support people in other roles who are developing.

There's also a role to play in the well-being of our teams, many of which work in the uniquely challenging environment of shifts. You'll do this by independently monitoring, measuring and checking fatigue levels and risks, supporting the wider leadership by identifying risks or issues, and helping with solutions.

Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.
Main Responsibilities

  • The direct line management of all trainee positions within a Control Centre, including formal monthly trainee reviews, producing development plans for any other staff progression.

  • Ensuring all staff who join the Control Centre team have clear and structured learning and attainment plans that are delivered through the most efficient use of available resources. Identify any areas for concern and produce plans to address any issues.

  • Provide regular updates on the progress of all trainees to the Control Leadership team, including at monthly meetings.

  • Developing and maintaining a programme to ensure the effective communication and briefing of all business and policy changes relevant to the Control Centres to the teams, including those working shifts.

  • Ensuring that the Control Centre operations are compliant with all relevant policies and procedures.

  • Lead the Examining Officer community to ensure consistency and carry out independent quality assurance checks on authorisations and field checks, providing feedback to the Control Leadership Team in respect of compliance and non-compliance. Ensure all competency is kept in-date.

  • Promote and ensure the well-being of Control Centre staff working shifts by measuring fatigue risk on rotas and additional working hours, ensuring consistency and actions where risk is identified. Work with other managers in Control to ensure fatigue risk is minimised by effective use of Shift Rotas and fatigue measurement tools.

  • Contribute to the ongoing assurance of fair and efficient rotas, and working hours arrangements.

  • Assist, if requested, with any investigations and the development of learning opportunities

  • Ensure the delivery of any awareness briefings or training to the wider business that is relevant to Control Centre operations.

Candidates should ideally hold a level 4 qualification or above. However, applications are welcomed from candidates who don't meet this requirement, but have skills or experience that could help them succeed in this role, with an understanding to undertake any necessary qualifications and training to reach this level. This could typically be a HNC in Business Management or similar along with any leadership training. Any training required will be provided and supported by the company

  • There is a need for good written and verbal communication skills and an ability to coordinate your own movements, and prioritise your own workload. It's also necessary to be conversant with Microsoft Office, producing documents and presentations.

  • Each role is based at one of the company Control Rooms but there will be a need to travel to other company depots, as well as to external locations, so a full driving licence is required.
