Full Job Description

Director of Delivery and Engineering required to lead the technical delivery and software engineering of Royal Mail technology platforms, products and projects. DELIVERY Accountable for delivery partner performance, embed clear metrics and KPIs, and set actions in place to continually improve delivery performance. Own the CoE for Delivery and Business Analysis, providing capability into delivery portfolios in a matrix model. Lead approach to hypercare and tiger teams to ensure products/projects are set up for success, or to intervene on problem deliveries. Play a lead role in embedding new agile ways of working within RM. ENGINEERING Lead the software Engineering strategy and build Engineering capability through a mix of internal RM and third party delivery partners. Drive consistency in engineering across internal and the multiple 3rd party partner teams. Requirements for the Role: DELIVERY - Develop delivery partner performance metrics and KPIs, with the goal of ensuring we have accurate representation of delivery velocity and quality, and leading improvements in delivery performance. Ensure sound processes around estimating and financial controls. - Build strong relationships with our delivery partners on a trust and collaborative basis, with a partnership lens not a customer-supplier relationship, whilst challenging them and holding them to account for their performance. - Continually improve the quality and reliability of technology delivery by ensuring strong technical challenge of our delivery partners. - Lead and develop the internal Centre of Excellence capability for Project Management (waterfall) and Delivery Management (agile) delivery, and Business Analysis. Lead and develop PMs, DMs and BAs working in a matrix model. - Play a key role in our move from projects to products, working with Product Director and Agile CoE to embed and evolve best practices in ways of working. - Lead approach to hypercare and tiger teams to ensure products/projects are set up for success, or to intervene on problem deliveries. - Key contributor towards sourcing strategy - internal v partner mix, and where required, partner strategy and selection. ENGINEERING - Define, implement and mature an Engineering strategy, including insourcing and partner strategy, across all RM technology. - Lead and develop the Engineering capability for RM. Build the optimal balance of capacity and capability through RM internal and External Engineering and Devops/Continuous Delivery resources, ensuring the highest quality and standards are maintained. - Develop, publish and promote a clear set of principles, standards, patterns, guidelines and Engineering artefacts that enable re-use and adaptability across the technology landscape. - Ensure RM partners are delivering to the highest quality and adhering to the RM defined Engineering principles. - Work with Head of Quality Assurance to support the shift to increased automation and shift left testing capability.

We are looking for someone with strong experience of agile delivery methodologies and the shift from projects to products. Driving a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to optimise delivery processes, enhance productivity and mitigate risks. A people manager that can hire, mentor and manage performance with the ability to provide strategic direction. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross functional teams and stakeholders.,

  • Proven experience in a senior Delivery leadership role, preferably in a fast-paced and technology-driven organisation.
  • Exposure to / played a key role in digital transformation
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing teams, including hiring, performance management, and professional development.
  • Demonstrated experience in building a high performing Delivery function, balancing 3rd party capacity with inhouse expertise
  • Proficient in modern ways of working and ability to scale Product ways of working
  • Professional experience gained across a wide range of IT related disciplines (planning, analysis, development, operation & service management) with the knowledge and understanding of the role of Delivery Management
  • Knowledge and experience of working in a Product and Platform environment
