Full Job Description

Rossall School is among the most successful and prestigious independent boarding and day schools in the North West with flourishing pupil numbers.

With an enticing and highly aspirational culture, Rossall School is offering opportunities for exceptional educators to come and work with supremely talented, inspiring and compassionate professionals to teach our hard working, ambitious and delightful pupils.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Director of Music with the ability to ensure that the department continues to develop apace. This is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding musician and educational leader to provide inspiration to pupils, to develop their confidence and skill in the performing arts and to contribute to the rich musical life of the school.

The successful applicant will be a qualified teacher, able to teach Music up to A Level standard and be an accomplished performer in their own right.

In 2020, Rossall launched its International Piano Academy and became one of a small number of All-Steinway Schools within the UK. The Academy is directed by Victor Lim and attracts outstanding musicians from around the world. Associate Professor Martin Roscoe is one of the UK's foremost pianists and has an exceptional reputation as an exciting recitalist and prolific recording artist. Other staff within the music department trained at some of the UK's leading conservatoires including the Royal Northern College of Music and the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music. The internationally acclaimed concert pianist Kathryn Stott is also an associate professor.

The choral tradition here at Rossall is well-established and the mighty Harrison and Harrison Organ has recently undergone a full restoration as it approaches its centenary. Rossall's Signature Recital Series, launched in September 2021, brings some of the UK's top performers to the School and helps ensure that Rossall continues to be a centre of excellence for the performing arts in the North West.

With Manchester and Liverpool just an hour away, our students are within easy access to some of the finest professional orchestras within the UK (including the Hallé and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic). Opportunities for regular performance abound at the School; our musicians perform in assemblies, regular lunchtime concerts, theatre productions, charity coffee mornings and external concerts. Competition and formal recognition of learning are both important features of the musical experience and our pupils have achieved some impressive accolades over the last few years.

Music Theatre is a much-loved aspect of our performing arts offering. Recently, students have put on productions of West Side Story, Chicago, Oliver, Mary Poppins and Matilda. Our Sixth Formers have performed on stage with the West End legend, Rob Houchen. Anything Goes, our most recent production, wowed audiences in March and has set the bar high for next year's spectacle.
