Full Job Description

The Director of Severn Pathology Services is managerially accountable for providing professional, operational, and strategic leadership to Severn Pathology Services which includes Blood Sciences, Cellular Pathology, Infection Sciences, and the South-west Genomics Laboratory Hub.

The successful candidate will provide expert leadership in the delivery of comprehensive Pathology services, therefore we are looking for a strong, credible leader with significant leadership and management experience, who is able to effectively influence both internally and externally.

The post holder will actively input and influence the provision and development of Pathology services across the West of England Pathology Network.

In delivering this vision, theDirector of Severn Pathology Services will beresponsible for:

  • Leading the strategic development of Pathology services, ensuring alignment with the Trust's clinical strategy.

  • Development of strategic plans.

  • Ensuring the Trust is responsive to the commissioning agenda.

  • Overseeing the development and delivery of safe, efficient, and cost-effective services.

  • Leading discussions with commercial and NHS partners to support service delivery.

  • Leading service development, ensuring that staff development and customer / patient focus is at the core.

  • Working with Pathology network partners to support maturation of the network.

  • Representing Pathology services both locally, regionally, and nationally.

    § Extensive senior leadership and operational management


  • experience (5 years +) gained within a healthcare provider

    setting, or other large public sector organisation.

    § Proven people management experience in a senior

    role, preferably working across organisations, partnerships or with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience of leading and managing substantial service change and redesign in a complex environment.


  • § Evidence of significant achievement in managing and delivering strategic level projects or workstreams.

    § Experience of managing complex operational situations that involve staff from all levels within the organisation and across a range of professional and organisational boundaries.
  • Strong communication and relationship skills, including proven ability to build relationships with senior leaders and partners, and the ability to deliver complex, sensitive, and sometimes contentious corporate messages.

  • Strong commercial awareness and understanding, with the ability to lead business development in a competitive environment/market.

  • Personal alignment with the Trust's Values of: Caring, Ambitious, Respectful and Supportive.

  • Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist is desirable but not essential.

    Pathology services are at the forefront of delivering 21stcentury healthcare and are key to an organisation's ability to provide high quality patient care.
