Full Job Description

To drive the quality of DPDs technical Transport & Fleet Apprentice Programmes through line management of and supporting the Apprentices on programme with both practical and theoretical aspects of their qualifications and day to day roles. In addition to further support the LGV Training department and wider business through knowledge and experience of the industry and driving roles and developing skills.

Key Tasks/Areas of Responsibility

The tasks below are not exhaustive and requirements may change due to operational constraints or additional business needs.

a. Operational

  • Line management of all Apprentices on the following programmes; LGV, Urban Driver,Fleet & Transport.

  • Provide mentoring support for all Transport & Fleet Apprentices, inclusive of LGV & VMU Apprentices.

  • Actively support with qualification specific training, exam practice, presentation skills etc.


  • - Liaise with Driver Training Manager - Safety & Content, to ensure that all communications, information, roster changes etc are communicated to Apprentices
  • Support with the organisation and delivery of the pre-opex Apprentice project for Fleet & Transport

  • Liaise with departmental line managers of Apprentices to ensure release for off jobtraining

  • Ensure all apprentice are familiar with and following company processes and policies, support and escalate where necessary

  • Assist to develop a sustainable Apprenticeship programme within Fleet & Transport inclusive of driving & technical roles to aid in succession planning for DPD

  • Liaise with external training providers to ensure programmes run well and benefit is realised by learners and DPD

  • Compete all monthly 1:1s with learners and periodic or quarterly reviews with learners and training providers.

  • Liaise with Early careers team to ensure programs are fulfilling all DPD requirements and standards in addition to the technical and operational needs of the business

  • Review programme success and report on KPIs to apply strategy with operations on future cohorts and programme changes


  • b. Financial
  • Ensure compliance with all Finance procedures including Expenses Policy

  • Remain Flexible to travel at all times to reduce the operational costs of Transport and the wider Network


  • c. Service
  • Support LGV Training, Apprentices & the wider Transport & Fleet departments through timely & professional development training delivery


  • d. Health, Safety & Security


  • Remain compliant at all times with Health, Safety & Security processes of our sites and customers (where applicable)
  • Communicate all relevant Health, Safety & Security information to all drivers during assessment, induction & training

  • Communicate all relevant Health, Safety & Security information to all customers and their employees during site visits and kit training


  • e. Human Resources
  • Communicate all relevant company information during assessment, induction and training


  • Key Measures of Performance
  • Apprentice attendance for training

  • Progress reporting & timely communication with management

  • Flexibility and approachability


  • Performance Reviews & Training
  • Initial Induction training


  • - Development training - external and internal programmes

    - Monthly 1:1s with Driver Training Manager - Safety & Content
  • Training when required due to relevant legislative or company changes

  • All other company training as prescribed

    Key Role Requirements

  • Clean Cat B driving licence (minimum)

  • Good driving record and compliance

  • Willingness to travel and spend nights away from home - Docklands frequently, Hinckley & Smethwick with other nationwide travel needed

  • Excellent Interpersonal skills and communicative English

  • Basic IT knowledge and ability

  • Previous line management experience or knowledge of management processes
