Caterpillar's Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat® and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. The Opportunity

Reporting to the Emissions Measurement Engineering Manager in the UK, this is a great career opportunity to work in a small, dedicated engineering team with responsibility for providing the best solutions for engine exhaust emissions measurement for engine laboratory and machine field testing usage.

The emissions measurement function is within the Global Engine Development UK, Test Facilities Engineering team.

What You Will Do:

Responsibilities span investigation, evaluation and procurement of emissions measurement instrumentation. You will develop processes and procedures to optimise the use of the instrumentation for use in the engine test laboratory. Support and lead where necessary, the team's requirement to ensure that equipment, reference specifications and verification procedures meet current and future global regulatory requirements. Be prepared to lead process improvement projects, provide customer learning and data concern support. Build on your coaching talents by working with the supporting operations team, other global facilities and our commitment to early talent development.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with Engine performance calibration development engineers to help resolve data concerns, prevent recurrence where appropriate.

  • Supporting global emissions measurement teams with equipment coaching, set up, functionality and problem solving.

  • Leading process creation and improvement projects.

  • Understand, control and improvement of emissions measurement uncertainty.

  • Lead New Technology Introduction of emissions measurement solutions.

  • Providing our process partners with procedures for engine and machine testing.

  • Working alongside industry partners and with suppliers of emissions equipment., Pending the number of applications, the criteria for the position may be enhanced to facilitate shortlisting. #LI-Hybrid

    Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.

  • Working knowledge of Engine Systems: Knowledge of engine and/or engine aftertreatment systems to enable an openminded approach to collaborating with customers over their data concerns and measurement requirements.

  • Working knowledge of Instrumentation equipment: demonstrate skills in utilising measurement equipment.


  • Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
    Level Working Knowledge:

    Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
    Level Working Knowledge:

    Problem Solving: Application of techniques to address measurement and process problems in diverse situations.

    Priority Setting: Good ability to self-set priorities and be reactive.

    Interpersonal Relationships: Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner.

    Top Candidates May Demonstrate:
  • Engineering degree, HND or related technical discipline.

  • Project Management: 6Sigma, Prince2, RIBA or other project management methodologies.

  • 6Sigma, 8D or other specific problem-solving methodologies.
